Best Things

  • Amazingly brilliant, diverse, fun, and interesting peers and professors
  • Beautiful campus with stunning architecture and stately live oaks
  • Houston is a big-city setting with tons of art and cultural opportunities.

  • More best things . . .

Worst Things

  • The humidity during the summer is nearly 100 percent, so get ready to shower often.
  • Students are often focused on their future careers than engaging in the moment.
  • Texas is big on cars, and Houston's public transportation is underdeveloped. As a result, parking at Rice is very limited, and the parking enforcement is notoriously strict.
  • Each college throws similar parties every year. Although this isn't a problem for some, others may find the social scene repetitive.

Overall ExperienceWhat's This?

Overall, Rice students are highly satisfied with their college experiences. While they complain about some of the negative aspects of Houston (pollution, transportation, traffic, panhandlers), they also admit that there are many positive aspects to Rice’s location (cultural and social opportunities of a big city, great restaurants!). Similarly, students have gripes about the University, including the increasingly bleak parking situation and a somewhat repetitive social scene (the same parties every year). Many aspects of Houston and Rice can be seen as both positive and negative. Houston weather is warm and temperate for the winter months, but it is oppressively hot and humid in the summer. Rice’s small campus and student body are nice because they create a personal environment and allow students to meet more people and not just feel like faces in the crowd.

Rice students love the residential college system. They also find their courses to be challenging but manageable. With few exceptions, the instruction is very engaging, and professors are accessible and personally interested in students. Rice University is steeped in tradition, and some of these traditions (O-Week, Willy Week, and Beer Bike) are the most anticipated social events of the year. Rice is small enough that these events bring together almost the entire student body. The traditions, high academic standards, and amazing people that make up the Rice community create an extraordinary and irreplaceable environment, making Rice an incredibly unique and unparalleled university.

Not Very Attractive People

The people at Rice are great- but it can be hard to find attractive ones. You have a split population, about 50% Texan, and about 50% from elsewhere, but while everyone is nice and very smart, it can be difficult to find people that I would call stunning out of a crowd of Rice students.

The Residential College System Is Amazing

The residential colleges are what make a lot of people choose Rice. When you enter as a freshman you're assigned to a residential college that you'll be a part of for four years, where you can eat and partake in the college's particular social activities, and it's a great way to establish a network of friends and immediately get involved. The campus housing is less of a dorm environment than a community that you get to be involved in just for being admitted!

People Complain, but It's World Class

Every residential college has a servery, and even though some are known for being better than others, in truth, the campus dining is world-class, and the students here are very spoiled when it comes to food, they just forget it because the food is so good, and available almost all of the time.
