Some Dorms Have It Easier. You don't really need a car on campus. The shuttles are free and most buildings are within walking distance. For off campus housing students, parking can be a hassle. Some of the lots are rather far away. Many students manage to get convenient parking in lots at residential colleges, but that varies for Northern/Southern colleges.

They Trust You – RUPD is rather lenient. Rice is a wet campus, and many students drink. Residential colleges are tasked with enforcing most of the rules. RUPD isn't looking to bust you, but they will enforce the rule if underage students drink in public.

Intramural Trumps Varsity – With the exception of Baseball, Rice students aren't very enthusiastic about varsity sports. But the University does provide free tickets to sporting events all over Houston. Intramural sports between residential colleges are immensely popular.

Pretty Decent – Rice is very helpful in regard to student aid. Just do the CSS Profile and FAFSA. Under $80,000 is pretty much a free ride. After that expenses rise. Financial aid department is very approachable regarding concerns.

This Is Texas! Weather is warm in the summer, cool in the fall, winter, and spring. We rarely get snow, but even the threat of snow can cancel classes. The weather is great great during the school year, but always carry an umbrella in your bag, just in case.

Pretty Cool – The Library is open 24 hours on weekdays, and long hours on Saturday and Sunday. The Rec Center is pretty new and has state of the art facilities. The RMC also has plenty of spots to hangout at, though they are most popular with graduate students. Each residential college has its own unique commons, which are open to students from other colleges. They often have TV/game rooms and are immensely popular.

Most of the Dorms Are Nice – The newest dorms on campus are the nicest. And they are distributed differently in different residential colleges. At Baker, freshmen have equal chances as upperclassmen at getting great rooms. And Baker is at the heart of the campus.

Health & Safety:
Safe Within the Hedges – Within Rice's borders, there are no real concerns. the Rice Police Department also provides escorts if one ever feels threatened. Just make sure to lock the college doors during Beer Bike Pranks.

Computational and Applied Mathematics – The professors are great and very approachable. The department also has lots of money to offer students for summer internships.
College Senior 2011-07-18T06:07:21Z
Each residential college has its own computer lab. And then there's a few public one in the library, Mudd lab, and various academic department. WiFi is pretty fast at most of the dorms.

The engineering and chemistry departments are simply amazing. Biology/medical connection with the TMC also provide a plethora of professors to talk to and do research with. Classes aren't easy, and there is plenty of work to do, but it's all very rewarding.
College Senior 2011-07-18T06:03:12Z
Most students prefer living on campus, even if they live in Houston. Parking can be a hassle. It's simply convenient to live on campus. Also, since it's next to the TMC, nearby apartments/houses aren't cheap since medical students also look for housing in the area.

Rice has a very lenient alcohol policy. Administration trusts students to be responsible and foster a culture of care. However, at the moment alcohol policies are undergoing changes at Rice University. Peer pressure is basically non existent; students really can make their own decision here.

Guys & Girls:
There is something for everyone at Rice. There are cute guys and nerdy guys just like at every other school. The great thing about Rice University is that interests and social lives are diverse that there is something for everyone.

This Program Gets You Where You Need to Be – At Rice University, the architecture program is very intense. The work load is hard and expectations are high. However, the trade off for the work is the reward. Professors work closely with students and care about the education of each individual. Rice is none for having a tough architecture program, but the professors and the courses will get you to the level of education you need to be at to be great at architecture.

NO Regrets Here! Rice is everything I wanted in a college and more! The professors are wonderful, the class selection is great, and the friends I have made are awesome. I love everything about campus. By far the best part is the college system - it gives you your own built in family and neighborhood. I've known people who have turned down Harvard for Rice and have never regretted it solely because of the social atmosphere of the campus, both through the college system and with the faculty.

Rice prides itself on diversity. In a single class, you can find people from Thailand, England, and Washington. It's great to get so many different perspectives!

One of the main reasons I chose Rice was because it has such a good reputation for its professors being helpful and eager to teach. I have yet to be disappointed! The academics are Rice are some of the best in the nation, but that does not always mean that the teaching environment is the best. Rice, however, has gotten the best of both. Professors are eager to answer questions and help you with anything you don't understand. The advising system is great too. There are professors from your field of study assigned to you that you can make appointments with and PAAs (peer academic advisors) that are available anytime for you at your college (which is the community you live in). There are many great class options, and many people are eager to experiences areas of study outside their majors. Overall, the atmosphere for learning and expanding your understanding is superb!

Everyone Says It: Residential College System – It's the most common response when we are asked this question.and most people don't understand what makes it so special until they experience it themselves. Rice doesn't have a greek life. Instead, everyone incoming freshmen is sorted into houses (think Harry Potter) right before they arrive. Each "house" has its own set of initiation rituals, traditions, holidays, songs, mascots, secrets, etc. Its essentially a co-ed fraternity that everyone gets into and therefore has a "no man left behind" attitude. As a result, from the moment you kiss mommy goodbye you already have a sense of pride in your residential college and a huge support group.

Treated Like Kings – The H&D here is amazing. there are many serveries on campus that serve different styles of food and are all within 10 minute walking distance although usually people eat at their own residential college. The chefs offer cooking and baking classes free of charge and every so often will surprise us with a no-cost chocolate banquet or full-scale thanksgiving dinner!

It's a Quirky Family! The eco-evo department at Rice is very close-knit and interactive. After my first year, I knew nearly every student, professor, and even a fair few of the graduarte students! Professors know the name of each student and jump at the chance to help them get research positions, recommendations, and other academic/career opportunities. Of all the biological science departments, Eco-Evo is by far the most accepting and laid back. Make no mistake, its still just as rigorous.

The on-campus transportation is very efficient and expedient. For the metro system in Houston, buses sometimes run a bit late but are more or less predictable and trustworthy.
College Junior 2011-06-27T03:50:42Z
Without a doubt, Rice University offers one of the greatest learning institutions of not only the United States, but also the entire world. The science and engineering departments are particularly strong and can help guide students to future career paths.

Social Outings in Houston, Texas – Although there are many exciting places in Houston, such as NASA Space Center, the Galleria shopping mall, and the museums, this city can get a bit boring. As one gets older however, the night life is great, but as a college student, Houston's no New York or L.A.

Administration Is Understanding – You are an adult. You are treated as an adult. End of story.
There is a wet campus policy on campus, meaning that if you are over 21 you can legally have alcohol on campus. Any kind of alcohol. If you are under 21, it is illegal, but rarely are there infractions. There are public and private parties. If your door is closed you can pretty much have alcohol even if you're underage. No one is going to bust if you if you're just relaxing and drinking with your friends. The campus is getting stricter this past year, but that is due to a rise in EMS calls (basically drink responsibly). BTW, Rice has their own EMS which is run by students. You won't get in trouble if you call them, they are really there to help you out.
Sorry, there are no reviews.
