College Prowler Take

As the smallest Division I school in the country, we always play against bigger schools, which unfortunately has not resulted in a fabulous athletic record. Despite being Division I, students do not demonstrate much school spirit or support in regards to Rice’s varsity teams. Home football games usually get a fairly decent turnout, and after claiming the championship title of the College World Series in 2003 (Woo hoo!), the baseball team has since received massive support and attention. Sadly, most of our other varsity teams go virtually unnoticed by the overall student population. Compared to other universities that charge students to attend games and still fill the seats, Rice gives free tickets to any Rice student, and most athletic events still have poor attendance.

The club and intramural environment is another thing entirely. A large variety of club and intramural sports are available, and a high percentage of the student population participates on one of these teams. Competition between the residential colleges is what drives the intramural system (although non-team or non-college sports are also very popular). Powder-puff and Flag football games between colleges usually draw a crowd of fans/cheerleaders from the respective colleges. It could definitely be argued that more students on campus care about the club and intramural teams than the varsity teams.

Despite the fact that Rice is a Division I school, varsity athletics are not followed as much as at other Division I schools. However, IM sports are huge, especially when Residential colleges are pitted against each other. Most students participate in IM sports as players or fans. It’s a great feeling being out on the field and having friends from your college cheer you on to victory.

The men’s baseball team recently defied all odds to win the College World Series in 2003 for the first time ever, toppling Texas—not once but twice—before defeating Stanford in the final. There is also a good IM sports program with an amazingly wide selection of activities, including oddities like wallyball and, get this, inner tube water polo!

Varsity sport events are usually not as well attended at Rice as they tend to be at other schools. Rice is the smallest school in the country that competes at the Division I level, which means that we are always competing against opponents with a much greater pool of students to draw from. A classic example is when Rice plays the University of Texas—a school of 2,700 taking on a 50,000 student powerhouse. But despite this disadvantage, Rice actually does quite well in most sports, and phenomenally well in a select few. Women’s basketball, as well as men’s and women’s cross-country, track, and tennis are a few sports in which Rice excels.

Sports are not that big here. There are a lot of intramurals. It’s probably because the fields are along the outskirts of the campus, so we don’t get to see the athletes.

IM sports are pretty big, but varsity is not. Sports are not all that big here, although we do have teams.

Gyms and Facilities

  • Autry Court - Autry Court is the main athletic facility on campus. It has a swimming pool, several full-sized basketball courts (volleyball and badminton nets are set up at certain times), racquetball courts, and two weight rooms. One of the rooms has strictly weights and weightlifting machines, the other has some weightlifting machines, as well as step-machines, rowing machines, exercise bikes, elliptical machines, and treadmills. Most of these machines are equipped with their own small-screen TVs. Bring your own headphones if you want sound!
  • College Weight Rooms - Most of the residential colleges have small weight rooms of their own. These vary in quality, but the average college weight room has only a few standard machines (treadmill, step-machine, exercise bike, basic weights).
  • Cox Fitness Center - A large facility with many weight and exercise machines, the Cox Fitness Center is located on the southeast corner of Rice Stadium, and is utilized by all Rice athletes, as well as some other members of the Rice community.
  • Outdoor Tennis Courts - There are outdoor tennis courts in two different locations on campus. Both facilities are very well-maintained and are lighted for nighttime play.

Getting Tickets

Tickets to all Rice athletic events are free to Rice students with a valid student ID, and finding an available seat is never much of a problem.

Most Popular Sports

Baseball and football are without a doubt the most popular and widely supported sports at Rice University. Students rarely attend other sporting events, but every football game has a decent turnout. Since Rice won the 2003 College World Series (with the biggest victory in College World Series championship-game history), Rice students have suddenly become huge baseball fanatics.

Meenakshi made her own dimple?by accident, of course! In Kindergarten, she fell off of the jungle gym and bruised her cheek pretty badly. Today it is a nice little dimple with a great history.
