Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

As one of the smallest Division I schools in the country, Rice is known to always play against bigger schools, which unfortunately has not resulted in a fabulous athletic record. Home football games usually get a fairly decent turnout, and after claiming the championship title of the College World Series in 2003, the baseball team has since received massive financial support and attention. Sadly, most of the other varsity teams go virtually unnoticed by the overall student population. Compared to other universities that charge students to attend games and still fill the seats, Rice gives free tickets to any Rice student who wishes to attend a game.

While varsity athletics may be lacking, the club and intramural sports scene is another story entirely. A large variety of club and intramural sports is available, and a high percentage of the student population participates in one of these teams. Many club teams are often just as competitive as varsity teams. In 2010, Rice rugby won the conference title and went on to play at nationals. Competition between the residential colleges is what drives the intramural system (although non-team or non-college sports are also very popular). Powderpuff and flag football games between colleges usually draw a crowd of fans/cheerleaders from the respective colleges. It could definitely be argued that more students on campus care about the club and intramural teams than the varsity teams.

Intramural Trumps Varsity

With the exception of Baseball, Rice students aren't very enthusiastic about varsity sports. But the University does provide free tickets to sporting events all over Houston. Intramural sports between residential colleges are immensely popular.

Intra-Murals Trump Varsity

Most students are really into intramural or college sports. There are a lot of Division 1 varsity teams on campus, but the games aren't widely attended. Students are much more competitive with each other on campus then any other "rival" school.

Sports Are...An Option

Well, although Rice is a Division 1 school, there's not that much interest overall in attending games and matches. While there are certainly people who attend various games, there's just not the level of fan involvement you would normally see at a D1 school. IM and club sports are pretty popular overall, although different residential colleges will be more involved than others when it comes to some sports. Overall, I feel that most people at Rice view sports as just another activity to choose from.

Most Popular Sports

Baseball and football are without a doubt the most popular and widely supported sports at Rice. Students rarely attend other sporting events, but every football game has a decent turnout. Since Rice won the 2003 College World Series against Stanford (with the biggest victory in College World Series championship-game history), Rice students have become huge baseball fanatics.
