Most students feel that drugs are a non-issue at Rice. People that want them can seek them out, but for the most part you will rarely encounter anything other than alcohol unless you go looking for it. At Rice parties, alcohol plays a very key role and it’s highly visible, but drugs are not. Most students know of a few people who experiment with drugs, and the school newspaper will occasionally inform students of a drug bust that involved Rice students. However, these occurrences are incredibly rare. As far as the scene itself goes, pot is definitely the most widely-used illegal substance—most people who do experiment with drugs do so carefully, and one student mentioned that he’d only heard of one expulsion over drugs. All in all, the drug scene here is practically invisible. As with anywhere, it can be sought out, but it is certainly not prevalent and unavoidable.

The drug scene is pretty minimal on campus. You'll here the occasional drug story, but these are definitely few and far between. You don't have to do drugs to enjoy the social scene at Rice. Many more students choose to drink rather than smoke or take pills.

Weed is very accessible here, and you probably will not get in trouble for it. I haven't seen any harder drugs here at all, although I'm certain a very small minority does them. You will not notice drugs at all if you or your social circle is not interested in them. Alcohol, on the other hand, is a very noticeable and popular drug. As far as tobacco, smoking cigarettes has caused a little controversy over here in terms of where you can light up.

I don’t know much about drugs on campus. As far as I know, there isn’t all that much. Pot is available and around, but I don’t think that the majority of the student population uses it. Alcohol is readily available since it’s a wet campus. There are plenty of 21 year olds around, and pretty much everyone drinks. It’s a major part of the social scene. The nice thing, though, is that there is never any pressure to drink or do drugs. Students recognize that it is a personal choice that one makes, and they respect that. |

People drink a lot and use drugs sometimes. It’s really not a problem. These are driven, motivated, and intelligent people. |

I never ran into drugs. It’s not...
I never ran into drugs. It’s not something there’s a lot of or any peer pressure about—I knew some people who did a lot of drugs, some with whom I was very close, and I never felt interested or bothered by it. In terms of the alcohol scene, there’s a lot of it, and it’s easy to find. Just make sure you know your limits, and you decide how much you want to be a part of the drinking scene before you start experimenting. |
