College Prowler Take
Students feel lukewarm about Rice facilities. Over the last couple years, there has always been one construction project or another going on to improve facilities. The noise pollution and ugly construction equipment can be a nuisance, but the improvements made to the Rice gym, the student center, and several academic and residential buildings, with the addition of the food serveries, new college commons, and other new buildings (Martel College, the new Wiess College, and the Jones Graduate School of Business, for example) seem to be worth the trouble. T he student body is also excited about acquiring two new dorms, Duncan and McMurtry, in the fall of 2009, as well as a brand new recreational facility center that’s supposed to be pretty decked out. Fortunately, all students can enjoy the new and old food options at the student center, and afterward attempt to burn off these options at the Rice gym. The recent addition of small television screens to each treadmill, elliptical machine, and exercise bike has been a popular one. However, the TVs are not always in the best of shape, and a few have problems with static, or are unable to receive certain channels. The Rice Media center offers a photo lab, which is open to anyone in the Rice or Houston community. However, in order to use the lab, you must either take a photography class or demonstrate that you have previous training. The movie theater located in the same building is small and cozy, and shows an excellent variety of exotic movies (usually foreign or independent films).

Rice just built a huge new athletic facility which looks beautiful. There's also an obscenely large football stadium. The library is great too. Overall, the facilities are extraordinary for the size of the school.

Rice's athletic facility is tiny, considering its student population, but a brand-new recreation center is being built and will open next semester, while the current rec center will be remodeled to be available only to student athletes. The library, which has recently been remodeled, is very nice, and a choice place to study. The student center is a central part of campus and includes a lot of offices, lounges, and halls for all sorts of events.

In the student center, there are also many different lounges and conference rooms available for Rice community use, as well as the campus bookstore. There’s also a Kinko’s, a convenience store, a Subway, a student-run Coffeehouse, a cafeteria, an undergraduate student pub, and a Smoothie King. |

Facilities are pretty good. The gym has been remodeled in the last couple years, and it has a lot of great options. Many students go there to work out in groups and individually. The recreation center also offers many different fitness programs and neat courses to students, faculty, staff, and alumni. However, even though it has undergone a lot of great changes, the gym is still a little outdated, and I think they are talking about redoing it. The student center is a great place to hang out, and many off-campus residents spend quite a lot of time there. Many of the main student organizations have offices in the student center, as well as most student services such as Career Services, Academic Advising, and the Study Abroad Office. |

The gym is decent, although it’s not as good as some schools I’ve visited. The student center is pretty basic, nothing spectacular. |
FactsWhat To Do on Campus
On campus, you can go swimming, pump some iron, or practice other sports at Autry Court. Students can also get a coffee, smoothie, beer, or sub sandwich at the student center, take in an independent film or use the photo labs in the Media Center, see an exhibition of a contemporary artist at the Rice Gallery in Sewell Hall, or go see a play or musical in Hamman Hall or any of the nine residential colleges. You can also go to a pub, see music performances, study, chill in the quads with guitars and people, have picnics, play baseball, and barbeque.
Favorite Things To Do
Pub night on Thursdays at Willy’s Pub is very popular with most underclassmen, although seniors and grad students prefer to go to the calmer Valhalla pub (also on campus). The Coffeehouse in the student center does good business late into the night (closes at 12 a.m.), and they sometimes host open-mic nights, poetry slams, and small concerts. The Undergrounds, located in the basement of Lovett College, is a cozy candlelit venue for student musicians and performers, and the coffee and hot chocolate are free (donations encouraged). Shepard Music Hall is a source of frequent, free, and amazing concerts and operas. Rice Dance Theater, the Rice Philharmonics (an a capella group) and Spontaneous Combustion (an improv comedy group) all perform frequently in various spaces on campus, often to large crowds. The Rice Players and the residential colleges put on amazing theatrical productions, many of which are student produced and directed. IM sports are huge, and some varsity sports are popular as well, with free admission to students.
