Social Scene
The college system makes the big step of making first social
connections a piece of cake. Some people feel that this can be a downside if students never choose to go beyond the walls of their own residential college. This isn't entirely negative, since each college consists of a very diverse population. However, the social scene may begin to feel limited by the end of sophomore year if a student doesn't make an attempt to venture out. Luckily, there are tons of easy ways to meet people at Rice if a person feels inclined to do so. Social involvement runs the gamut from social recluses who lock themselves away with their computers every day to social butterflies who seem to know every face they see on campus. Let it be noted, though, that the former is regrettably the more prevalent state.
Hookups or Relationships?
The running joke is that people come in as freshmen and
either meet someone during orientation week, date them
for four years, and then get married, or they will experience
nothing more than late-night party hookups for four years.
For better or for worse, the rumors are born of truth, with one-night stands being the more popular choice. In short, not much casual dating goes on at Rice.
Dress Code
The looks at Rice range from preppy to athletic to thrift store.
Clothes are just one of the many ways through which Rice students express themselves. People tend to find what works for them and what makes them comfortable, and develop their own style. There are girls that dress up in skirts and curl their hair every day, while other students regularly go to class in sweats or hospital scrubs. Seriously, as long as you're wearing something, you'll be fine. Actually, rescind that-sometimes clothing is optional (see NOD, Baker 13).
