Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Although situated in the heart of a huge city, the Rice campus, for the most part, feels like it’s sealed by an invisible, protective forcefield. Most Rice students feel exceptionally safe and secure on campus. The Rice University Police Department goes to great lengths to keep the campus secure and build a positive relationship with the student body. While many students complain about the severity of parking ticket enforcement, the overall consensus is that the RUPD does its best to ensure the safety and comfort of college students on campus. In other words, they are not out to bust crazy college kids and drain their meager bank accounts; they are there to protect and serve the student body and make sure a productive learning environment is not disturbed by unwanted outsiders.

The safety services (blue-light phones, escorts, dorm alarms) are very effective and helpful. While there have been a few isolated incidents of theft or trespassing in the last few years, most students agree that they have never felt unsafe at Rice, and many students feel comfortable enough with campus security to leave their rooms unlocked.

Pretty Safe

There's very little crime on campus, though I have heard of two muggings nearby. Only thing I worry about is alcohol safety.

Really Safe

With such a small campus, it takes the campus police a very short amount of time to respond to emergencies. I feel very safe here, there are gates that close every night and on the weekends and the dorm I reside in requires 3 locks before I actually am able to go enter my room.

RUPD

Rice University Police Dept. is around campus quite a bit. There are also blue light emergency buttons located across campus that will send your call straight to RUPD if you're in trouble. Rice is in a really nice part of Houston though, located in between West U. (multimillion dollar homes) and the medical center, so there's not a lot of outside safety issues.

Facts

Did You Know? Rice has its own police department, known as RUPD. They are not rent-a-cops, but an actual Houston police department, with officers who are hand-picked to work there. Each residential college has an officer assigned specifically to a college. The officers host an annual study break, known as "Cookies and Cops," at each residential college to discuss campus safety and security with students.
