College Prowler Take

Many students try to stay on campus for their entire time at Rice because Rice’s social life is so focused on campus and within the college system. Some students feel that living off campus cuts them off from their old social circles, making it hard for them to keep up with their friends or make new friends. Other students feel quite the opposite, seeing living off campus as a breath of fresh air and a break from the monotony of campus living, the college system, the same social hangouts and activities, and the same parties. They have found off-campus life to be a very positive experience, and feel that is has widened their social circle and helped them to get out and explore Houston.

As for the housing selections off campus, there is a huge variety to choose from, including actual houses, apartments, townhouses, garage apartments, and studio apartments. A range of prices are available, and apartments can be found very near to campus (a must if you will not have a car), as well as farther away. The online Off-Campus Housing Guide is a very helpful resource to see what is currently available, and if you start looking early (a few months in advance), you should not have any problem finding a place to your liking.

Off-campus housing is cheaper than living on campus, but the drawback is that you generally need to have a car, and parking is going up in price every year. However, the experience of living off campus is generally worth it, because it’s really great to have your own room, be able to cook your own food, and feel free to do what you want to do when you want to do it. Plus, if you move off voluntarily, you get Voluntary Move-Off Points, which means you can never get bumped off campus again, and you get extra points in the room draw for the rest of your time at Rice. This can even be fulfilled by going abroad for a semester or a year (which I also highly recommend).

I’ve lived in off campus housing for three years, but I’ve always been an active part of the on-campus social scene. There is a nice neighborhood around Rice, as well as many apartment complexes, but bring a car.

It’s totally worth it, in my opinion. Living off campus as a student is a great way to mitigate the conflict between wanting privacy and not wanting isolation—there’s always a couch to sleep on if you want to sleep on campus some weekend, and if you get a meal plan you can still have lunches between classes at your residential college. Also, living off campus is the best way I know to get to know Houston—-most of the cool places that made me love living there I’d never been to before I moved off, and some of the best friends I made at Rice were friends I met that year. The best way to go about it is to find somewhere within walking distance (there are a few) and to move off with someone that you’re good friends with already.

We’re right in the middle of things—there are dozens of apartment complexes. It’s not a question of finding; it’s a question of choosing.

You will definitely need a car if you want to live off campus. But why would you? Colleges are so much fun.

Meenakshi made her own dimple?by accident, of course! In Kindergarten, she fell off of the jungle gym and bruised her cheek pretty badly. Today it is a nice little dimple with a great history.
