College Prowler Take
Overall, Rice students are highly satisfied with their college experiences. While they complain about some of the negative aspects of Houston (pollution, transportation, traffic, panhandlers), they also admit that there are many positive aspects to Rice’s location (cultural and social opportunities of a big city, great restaurants!). Similarly, students have gripes about the University, including rising prices, the increasingly bleak parking situation, and a somewhat repetitive social scene (the same parties every year). Many aspects of Houston and Rice can be seen as both positive and negative. Houston weather is warm and temperate for the winter months, but it is oppressively hot and humid in the summer. Rice’s small campus and student body are nice because they create a personal environment and allow students to meet more people and not just feel like faces in the crowd. However, students also claim that it begins to feel confining at times.
Rice students love the residential college system. They also find their coursework to be challenging, but manageable. With few exceptions, the instruction is very engaging, and professors are accessible and personally interested in students. Rice University is steeped in tradition, and some of these traditions (O-week, Willy Week, and Beer Bike) are the most anticipated social events of the year. Rice is small enough that these events bring together almost the entire student population. The traditions, high academic standards, and amazing people that make up the Rice community create an extraordinary and irreplaceable environment. While any Rice student would admit to the school’s shortcomings, most believe the overall experience to be completely unique and unparalleled by any other university.

I like Rice because it is a very small school, and you realize that after a year; you see the same faces over and over again. It is very diverse, and if you are a party animal, there is plenty to do. If you are subtle and not into the party scene, you also have a great selection of things to do on campus. Overall, I began the year horribly. I hated it, and I wanted to go home. I adjusted to Rice and learned to appreciate where I found myself. Since I am not a drinker, I had a problem dealing with the parties and all the different activities that came with the alcohol. I learned to realize that it isn’t as bad as it first seemed. You get used to it. I can honestly say I grew fond of the college I was placed in—supposedly the biggest party college on campus. You can imagine my horror at being placed at a college where I felt like I didn’t fit in. But overall, I met great people, loved the professors and my classes, and learned a lot about the college life. |

I would say that I am happy at Rice about 95 percent of the time. There is a lot of pressure at Rice to do well, but the students are not competitive with each other; they try to do their personal best. They tend to overwhelm themselves with lots of hard classes and activities and a social life, so when they get really busy, sleep suffers. But in general, I’d say that most Rice students are happy to be busy. I wanted to go to Rice to get away from my family and form my own identity. I succeeded in that respect, but sometimes I wish I was closer to home. |

Overall, I had a good experience at Rice, but it took me the first two years to settle into my major and find the things that I like about Houston. Don’t get in a rut your freshman year—try getting involved with a bunch of different groups of people, eating routines, and weekend hangouts. Then, figure out what feels comfortable and fun to you. |

I’ve enjoyed my three years here. There’s plenty of stuff to do and a diverse population here, so you’ll find your right group of friends and something to get involved in. If you were the quiet type in high school, you’ll be fine here. If you like to party a lot, you’ll be fine here. I’m extremely happy here, and I honestly think anyone else can be, too. |

I love Rice! It’s a small campus, so you don’t feel lost all the time. You get to know the people you see every day. The college system is great, and the classes are all good. |
