Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Students give Rice mixed reviews on parking. Some students acknowledge that the parking situation is far superior to many other schools. (It’s never a problem to get a spot. You just register your car, pay your fee, and put the sticker on your window.) For anyone from New England or other big cities, it sounds fabulous. However, due to expansion and recent building projects, parking costs have gone up in price and spots fill up quicker. As a result, fewer students are bringing their cars to campus.

The big parking lots are far away by Rice campus standards, especially if you are assigned to one of the North Colleges (10 to 15 minutes on foot). This isn’t insurmountable, of course, and there are campus shuttles that go to the lots, but it does discourage spur-of-the-moment late-night trips to grab food or go visit your off-campus friends. Luckily, by the time you are a senior, you have a pretty good shot at getting a parking place in one of the small college lots. These spots cost a bit more but are well worth the extra money for the increased proximity and convenience.

parking for commuter students is way farther than some residential students, even after you are forced to move off campus due to shortage. our parking is significantly more expensive than University of Houston, and parking enforcement looks to generate revenue. they are really inconsistent with their ticketing

Expensive, but Sometimes Necessary

Parking at Rice is pretty expensive, but if you need to get around Houston a lot, or if you have to commute, it's worth it since Houston is a very car friendly city. Most of the parking lots are pretty far away from the rest of campus, but there's almost always space to park, and there's also shuttles during the week that will take you closer where you need to go. Also, depending on which permit you get, you can park in the closer lots in the evenings and on weekends.

Some Dorms Have It Easier.

You don't really need a car on campus. The shuttles are free and most buildings are within walking distance. For off campus housing students, parking can be a hassle. Some of the lots are rather far away. Many students manage to get convenient parking in lots at residential colleges, but that varies for Northern/Southern colleges.

Facts

Getting a Parking Permit

It's easy to obtain a parking permit as an undergraduate at Rice. Any student can get a permit to park in the Greenbriar or West lots, and lucky upperclassmen (almost exclusively seniors and/or officers in student government) may get permits to park in their college lots, which are located much closer to the residential colleges. However, it is more difficult to get parking in the South or North college lots, and they are more expensive.

Did You Know? Rice has a great policy of 15-minute parking along the Inner loop and President's Drive (areas where parking is not permitted). Students can park their cars alongside the curb and leave their emergency lights blinking while they run into a building for an errand, drop something off for a friend, unload boxes, or whatever. While students do occasionally luck out and are able to leave their car parked in this manner for longer than 15 minutes, Rice's parking enforcement is very strict. If you don't want a ticket, you probably shouldn't risk it!
