College Prowler Take

Although situated in the heart of a huge city, the Rice campus, for the most part, feels like it’s sealed by an invisible, protective forcefield. Most Rice students feel exceptionally safe and secure on campus. The Rice University Police Department goes to great lengths to keep the campus secure and build a positive relationship with the student body. While many students complain about the severity of parking ticket enforcement, the overall consensus is that the RUPD does the best they can to ensure the safety and comfort of college student on campus. In other words, they are not out to bust crazy college kids and drain their meager bank accounts; they are here to protect and serve the student body and make sure a productive learning environment is not disturbed by unwanted outsiders.

The safety services (blue-light phones, escorts, dorm alarms) are very effective and helpful. While there have been a few isolated incidents of theft or trespassing in the last few years, most students agree that they have never felt unsafe at Rice, and many students feel comfortable enough with campus security to leave their rooms unlocked.

I have always felt save here. The Rice police are very visible and they are super-friendly. You can call anytime for an escort, which is really great. There is some crime on campus, but overall I feel safe.

There is not a lot of crime, although muggings and robberies have been known to happen. Rice has a 24-hour police force accredited with the city of Houston but that has undergone special training to understand college students. They are here to protect us and leave us alone and respect private space.

The cops are great, you'll find yourself easily getting along with them. Every night they patrol campus on foot, vehicle, and golfcart. You'll feel pretty safe considering you're in the 4th largest city in the U.S.

I’ve never felt unsafe or endangered in all my time at Rice. There are 27 full-time police officers who are licensed by the state of Texas to protect us, and they have all of the authority of normal police officers. There are blue-light phones that are situated such that, no matter where you are on campus, you will be able to see one and get to it in a reasonable amount of time in case of an emergency, and police response is almost immediateHaving these systems in place makes Rice safe. This, however, does not mean that you can let your guard down. The key to staying safe, especially since we are an open campus in the middle of the fourth largest city in the country, is to stay alert and aware.

I always felt safe walking around on campus whatever the hour, but a rash of on-campus crime the last few months has made me retrospectively more wary. However, the campus police are around all the time, there are lots of blue-light phones, and the small campus means you’re always near some building or another. So, in general, I’d say the campus is very safe.

Did You Know?

Rice has its own police department, known as RUPD. They are not rent-a-cops, but an actual Houston police department, with officers who are hand-picked to work here. Each residential college has an officer assigned specifically to their college. The officers host an annual study break, known as “Cookies and Cops,” at each residential college to discuss campus safety and security with students.

Meenakshi made her own dimple?by accident, of course! In Kindergarten, she fell off of the jungle gym and bruised her cheek pretty badly. Today it is a nice little dimple with a great history.
