College Prowler Take

When you arrive for orientation week in August, be prepared to sweat like you have never sweated before. In the summer, Houston is unbearably hot and humid. Add to that the high pollution levels, and the result is frequent ozone warnings that caution against working or exercising outside during peak temperature hours. The mosquitoes come out in droves during these months, as well. Also be warned that when it rains, it pours. Think monsoon season. Several of the colleges have suffered flood damage in recent years, and a few upperclassmen tell very amusing tales about floating around the Inner Loop on inner tubes. After a particularly rainy spell, Rice campus will sometimes retain water for a long period of time, earning the affectionate nickname of William Rice’s Marsh (a play on the name of our founder, William Marsh Rice).

The good news is that Houston has fairly mild winters, and extended fall and spring seasons. Long after your northern friends have dug out their sweaters and mittens, you can call home and brag to them that you went running outside in shorts and a tank top. You can enjoy outdoor picnics, pickup soccer games, or lazy reading in a hammock well into November. Once it cools off, and if it isn’t raining, Houston weather is rather delightful. Don’t be fooled however; it does get chilly, so bring a coat!

I have got to complain about the weather. It is the only thing I hate about Houston—it is usually always humid and sticky! It never gets cold. It is usually warm and sunny, and it rains like crazy in August. So, if you love the rain and you love being scantily clad, then Houston is the place for you!

The weather is not very nice at times. It can be really humid and hot and sticky and rainy. But during the winter, it cools off and dries out and is downright pleasant. Bring mostly summer clothes. However, classrooms and buildings tend to be cold because of the air-conditioning, so have a few sweaters and sweatshirts and light jeans, as well.

The weather in Houston is usually mild, fairly hot, humid, and moist. Because of the city’s proximity to the Gulf, there is a high humidity level most of the year. In summer, the city is very hot and humid, and thunderstorms are fairly common. There is virtually no fall, and summer lasts up until around mid-October. Winter is mild, often allowing one to run around in shorts up until Thanksgiving or later. Spring is usually a delight—although a bit wet as far as rain, it actually is nice out.

The weather is as hot as they say, but it does get cold (even into the 30s) in the winter months, so don’t be fooled into leaving all your jackets at home. Also, air-conditioning is rampant in the buildings, so bring plenty of light sweaters and wraps.

It doesn’t get much worse than 40 degrees with rainy downpours, but by the same token, I was wearing shorts in January. When you first get to school it is hot and humid, but everything is air conditioned.

Meenakshi made her own dimple?by accident, of course! In Kindergarten, she fell off of the jungle gym and bruised her cheek pretty badly. Today it is a nice little dimple with a great history.
