Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The student body is mostly white, but there are students representing minorities. Among minority students, a significant contingent are international students. According to U.S. Census 2000 figures, racial demographics for the broader community of Rochester Hills are as follows. There were just under 70,000 people residing in Rochester. The city is about 90 percent white, 7 percent Asian, 2 percent black, less than 1 percent each Native American and Pacific Islander, 1 percent "multiracial," and 2 percent Hispanic (including other races). Just over 7 percent of the population of Rochester Hills were between the ages of 18 - 24, presumably including some traditional Rochester students.

Cookie Cutter College

It seems to me that the majority of Rochester College consists of Christian white kids. There are the occasional black Christians & maybe a Catholic or two, but Rochester makes it really hard to openly identify as something other than the specific mold that is expected within the school. It's usually easy to tell who is fairly religious & who rejects anything to do with spirituality, but people are smart to keep their opinions to themselves.

Moderate diversity on campus

In terms of the student body, most students at Rochester College are Caucasian. The most common racial/ethnic group after that are black/African American students. Other ethnicities can be seen. In the broader metropolitan area, people from Arabic, South Asian and East Asian backgrounds are common.

There is reportedly a significant minority of foreign-raised students, frequently within a context of RC's relationship with foreign-based ministries. Many of these students come from African, Asian and East European countries.

Mixed Culture

the thing about rochester college that i love is, it is a christian based college. they except you as you are and do not push religion on you. they expect that you respect the campus. so being able to go to school without worrying about sex, drugs, and someone judging me for what i believe in is great. i love going to school here, and we have some that aren't christian that go here, but they are not outcasted from events, this is a well connected community that i can honestly say is the best experience i have had in college, and i have been enrolled in an university and a community college.

Facts

Gay Pride

As a matter of school policy, it is forbidden to discriminate on the basis of gender/sex orientation, and assaults on another person are forbidden. That said, taking into account the school's culture of traditional Christian-informed instruction and ethics, it is unknown whether any school-sanctioned LGBT student organizations exist on campus. Informal LGBT tolerance among the student body may vary.

Political Activity

There is a yearly overseas trip involving missionary work combined with scholarly study. Many among the student body have an interest in missionary work, and many of the faculty either have participated in it or currently participate at least part time. Other opportunities regarding missionary work are posted from time to time on bulletin boards.

Economic Status

There are students from an assortment of economic backgrounds who attend Rochester College. The immediate areas of Rochester Hills, Troy, and Auburn Hills are generally affluent. Rochester College is a private institution, so certain costs may be elevated compared to the nearby Oakland University. Some students, especially international students, may be attending on partial or full scholarship. Many of these students come from modest economic backgrounds.

Most Common Religions

Rochester College is officially affiliated with the Church of Christ. Culturally, the most common religion practiced among the student body and faculty is Christianity. A weekly chapel service is mandatory for undergraduate students enrolled in the traditional program, and at least one class in religious/Bible studies is required before graduation for all majors.

Minority Clubs on Campus

Given the relatively small student body, it is unclear whether any minority population has reached the critical mass presumably necessary to initiate a minority-based club on campus. Such clubs may need the approval of school administrators to meet formally. Given the broader context of inclusive Christian fellowship encouraged by school faculty and administrators, it is unclear how such clubs may be perceived on campus.

Did You Know? Rochester Hills was once called Avon Township, dating back to the 19th century founding of the immediate area.
