Special Options

  • Many students will choose to use their meal options at the Corner Store or Sol’s, and purchase groceries rather than going to a dining hall to use their meals. It is important to note that you can only use one meal option during the hours specified for each meal. Also, most meal plans come with debit points that can be used at any of the dining halls, as well as in the vending machines on campus.

College Prowler Take

Gracie’s is the main dining hall for freshmen, and a specified number of meals are allotted in their dining plans. Most students vehemently complain about having to eat at Gracie’s so much during their first year. Many students rarely opt to eat at Gracie’s more than a few times after their first year. Even students who remain loyal patrons at Gracie’s will tell you that the food isn’t bad, just monotonous. The food at Gracie’s is served in a buffet-style, and it’s all-you-can-eat, but students normally find the same foods (or very similar) on the tables nearly every day. The addition of The Crossroads, Sandella’s, and Beanz has given students more options to choose from. Many of the eateries on campus accept meal options, debit, or Flex points as payment. Java’s and Henry’s, however, only accept Flex or cash. Students can put money onto their Flex account at the Bursars office. This money can then be used at the bookstore, any of the food establishments on campus, Subway, the Pita Pit, and any of the vending machines on campus. Debit can be used at most dining halls and in the vending machines only, and it comes as a part of most meal plans. It is important to note that Flex money will roll over to the next quarter, but debit will not.

Overall, the campus food selection at RIT leaves students with plenty of options. There isn’t much that you can’t get on campus by way of food, and (get this) most of it is actually edible, although many freshmen will tell you that this does not apply to Gracie’s. The main complaint is the hours that the halls are open. With the wide variety of eateries on campus, it can be confusing to students which restaurant is open at what time. Students also tend to complain about the lack of a 24-hour eating spot on campus. The fact that there are three markets available on campus is also a great advantage. While the prices at the markets are a bit high, it is possible to use meal options and debit. So, until their debit points run out, students don’t mind the prices as much.

There should be a 24-hour place to eat on campus. Students here are up all hours studying and doing projects, so an all-night eatery on campus would come in handy. Maybe they should get one of the local pizza places to take debit.

Many Eateries, Varying Menues, Food Is Generally Tasty.

A

As a freshman, the main dinning hall can get repetitive, but overall food quality is above average. After freshman year food offerings are extremely varied on campus as each of the campus eateries and stores have an independent manager. This allows for the various campus offerings to all use the same meal plans but offer significantly differing types of dining experiences.

Sandella’s is the best thing going here. Their food is great, and you can use your debit, not just your Flex.

If you are a ‘Pepsi person,’ this place is your dream come true. If you like Coke, then you are out of luck. Administration sold us out to Pepsi years ago, and Coke is now basically contraband on campus—you can’t buy it anywhere.
