Campus Strictness

Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

RIT is strict about many things that other colleges (especially larger universities) aren’t overly concerned with. Some of their policies seem archaic and useless. Many students feel that being a dry campus is not necessary, and that enforcing underage drinking laws would be more efficient than trying to ban alcohol campus-wide. Another area where students find strictness to be annoying is the “walk-only” zones on campus. Students are not allowed to use any wheeled transportation, including bikes, on the quarter mile. This may not seem like a big deal, but the quarter mile is the main route to get through campus. If you are riding a bike, rollerblading, skateboarding, or using a scooter, you have to go the long way around to get anywhere—which defeats the purpose of using the faster modes of transportation to get around campus.

A major problem with the policies that RIT enacts is that they are not well enforced, and if they are enforced, it is not done so equally. Some RAs are very strict about drinking in the dorms, while others are quite lenient. Many students feel that they should not have to follow certain policies since there have been allowances made for others. This causes headaches for Campus Safety since they are left to deal with the consequences. Student conduct hearings do not always have the same verdicts for the same crimes, which leads many students to believe that the system is unjust. Overall, RIT’s campus is not overly strict, but students won’t have as much freedom here as they would in the real world, or even at larger universities.

Relaxed

The campus police are pretty relaxed about the rules. They are more worried about people riding their bikes on the "walk only" paths than they are about parties. Also they are pretty lenient with parking.

Not to Strict

They have their fair share of rules but, they aren't to strict. Be discreet with alcohol and drugs though.
