College Prowler Take
RIT is a technical school geared toward technical students. Therefore, the students here weren’t exactly social gods in high school. This is not to say that everyone here wears glasses held together by tape and paperclips, or that we all wear pocket protectors. Chances are, if you are looking at RIT, then you are a bit of a geek yourself—maybe not the full-blown Star-Trek-watching, Dungeon-and-Dragons-re-enacting kind of geek—but you have to admit, you are a prospective tech student. When discussing the social scene at RIT, there is no getting past the high ratio of guys to girls. Many students complain because they don’t leave their rooms except for classes, food, and the occasional shower. For everyone else, it’s because of often stressful academic environment due to the quarter system that requires them to focus more time on passing and less time finding that mate. If you want to focus on school and get a degree, this is the school for you. However, the ratio has increasingly been getting better due to the fact that the college has been recruiting more female students. Maybe, just maybe, in the distant future we’ll build the ratio all the way up to, say, 50/50. Hey, a little wishful thinking never hurt anyone.

I’m part of CIAS, so I really don’t experience the ratio that much. I have a lot of girls in my class, so I don’t find it hard to meet them. |

Guys at RIT are different. I’m used to guys being a lot more forward. It’s kind of nice to not have to worry about being hit on all the time. |

FactsBirth Control Available?
Yes - There is a gynecologist who comes to the Health Center on a regular basis. You can make an appointment with her through the Health Center. Birth control prescriptions are usually filled off campus at Wegman's pharmacy department. The Health Center also has condoms available, and organizations such as Planned Parenthood regularly give them away.
Social Scene
The ratio of guys to girls makes the social scene an interesting one, to say the least. One of the most common complaints that girls have at RIT is that the guys here never leave their computers. However, if you can pull them away from their Counter Strike or Everquest for a few minutes, the guys here are actually quite interesting. The guys' biggest complaint is that there simply aren't enough girls on campus. Administration, however, is working to rectify that. Overall, the social scene can be great if you know where to look. The computer labs are where I start!
Hookups or Relationships?
Overall, there more hookups than long-term relationships at RIT. Many of the girls who come here unattached prefer to stay that way. There's a fair number of undergrads who are in relationships, though oftentimes, not with other RIT students. With the number of other colleges around the Rochester area, it can be easy to find someone to hook up with or to have a lasting relationship with, as long as you know what kind of person you're looking for.
Best Places to Meet Guys/Girls
Meeting people is one of the hardest things to do at RIT since most students seem content to simply stay in their dorms most of the time. This is not to say that it is impossible to meet other singles and have a good time, though. One of the best resources for interaction with other students is to get involved. Join a club or two, or just show up when they are having free food, hosting a party, or when there are a group of people in the hallways. Most students find friends within their major, but students here tend to be competitive and don't like dating other students in their field. By joining clubs and going to different events throughout the year, you greatly increase your chances of finding someone of the opposite sex who catches your interest.
Dress Code
At RIT, we have business majors who dress professionally, science students who prefer pajamas for their 8 a.m. classes, and art majors who wear tie-dyed clothing or whatever they happen to find at the thrift store up the road. The majority of students dress casually, and they dress up only when they have class presentations or an interview. Professors will tell you if they expect a certain level of dress for presentations and speeches, but beyond that, students here feel free to dress in clothes that they're comfortable in.
