Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Overall, the RIT campus is incredibly safe, considering the number of students. Mostly what Campus Safety deals with are drug- and alcohol-related problems, or occasional cases of automobile damage. Theft is not a notable problem on campus, and most cases occur only if the stolen items were left unattended or in unlocked rooms or cars. Students, male and female alike, say that they feel safe walking alone around campus at any hour of the day or night—this is mostly due to the overall serenity of the local area. The various blue phones around campus are for students who would want to phone in an emergency for whatever reason, and are another reason that students feel so secure here. Knowing that Campus Safety is only the push of a button away is very comforting to many students.

While Campus Safety is not highly regarded by many students, they are a respectable group who works (sometimes a little too hard) to ensure that the safety of all students is preserved. It is worth noting the past publicity that RIT received as a result of the so-called RIT riot during early May of 2004. This event was an isolated occurrence, and a brief one at that. Student sentiment was mixed regarding the incident. Some felt that Campus Safety and local police violated their rights as students, while others felt that the wily patrons were overly obnoxious and got what they deserved (mostly fines). The school administration has since addressed this problem by way of open forums and discussions about the causes behind the incident in hopes of preventing similar occurences from happening again.

Public Safety on Campus

Public safety is always available and ready to help any student on campus. I think that RIT makes student safety a high priority and as a woman that is very important. I think it is also great how our public safety works with our deaf and hard of heaing population to make them as comfortable as possible on campus as well.

Pretty Safe

There are blue light boxes within sight everywhere in campus. Campus safety is always making rounds, security comes every now and then to the dorms and checks the tunnels.

Campus Safety

Generally a safe campus, though a girl did get assaulted over the summer. I've walked home after work at 3 in the morning and have felt pretty safe doing so :)

Facts

Did You Know?

RIT’s Campus Safety offers weekend escort services, which students lovingly refer to as “the drunk bus.” The drunk bus circles the campus on weekend evenings, and offers students rides to their apartments, no matter how rude and obnoxious the students may seem. The drunk bus is a great resource to take advantage of if you have been out drinking or don’t want to ride home with someone who has been drinking. The bus is free of charge and drops students off in front of the dorm areas or apartment complexes.
