Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Rochester is a deprived city when it comes to nightlife. There are many colleges within a five-mile radius, yet there is little available in the way of college-level entertainment. It is damn near impossible for students to develop a favorite hang-out spot, due to the fact that new bars or clubs tend to overcharge or not stay open late enough. Nearly everything closes before 2 a.m., which makes for a short night if you don’t get out of classes until 10 or 11 o’clock. Most RIT students find themselves better off either staying on campus or venturing to one of the nearby colleges (normally Genneseo or U of R). Most of the clubs often consist of a fine mixture of college students, high-schoolers with fake IDs, and Rochester natives—none of whom are very outgoing or social. Chances are, if you venture into downtown Rochester, you’ll wind up talking to and dancing with the people you came with and not many others. Dance clubs are few and far between, and the music is either hip hop or techno. In short, there isn’t much variety for the younger crowd.

If you aren’t necessarily looking for some place to wet your whistle, then you have more options to consider. Many of the coffee bars in the area stay open late, and they often feature live entertainment on the weekends. There are also places like Steele and Waterstreet that offer other forms of entertainment besides just drinking and dancing. Overall, the nightlife in Rochester leaves a lot to be desired. There are always some house parties going on during the weekends in the Colony or private off-campus residences, but you won’t have access to great nightlife here like you would in a bigger city, like New York or Philadelphia.

Some Good Parties on the Weekends, but Mostly Dudes

There are parties every weekend at on or off campus apartments and houses. Unfortunately, due to the guy-to-girl ratio many times you'll find the party is a sausage fest. Occasionally there will be a really good party that has an even ratio and people from the other colleges in the area (all the other colleges are filled with girls). There are a bunch of clubs and bars in downtown Rochester and even a "drunk bus" late night shuttle that takes you there. Overall, pretty fun nightlife.

More Than Just Alcohol

RIT has great transportation to events around campus and off campus. We offer Tiger Den events to support our sports teams and there are numerous plays, activities and movie showings every night. I am underage so I can't give insight as to the party scenes in the city or on campus. Nightlife also includes teaching Asl to the average student so they can communicate with the students from the National Technological Institute for the Deaf.

Nightlife

The nightlife at RIT isn't wild at all. It's calm.

Organization Parties

Some of the fraternities and sororities will throw parties at local clubs and bars. These parties are usually closed and restricted for members and their dates only. Some clubs will do the same, but there is either a charge or you must be a member to attend. Most organizations will have their parties in an on- or off-campus apartment that the members have control of. If it is a dry party, clubs will often use the Fireside lounge or SAU Cafeteria to hold their little ‘shindig.’ Many of the colleges have their own semi-formals in the winter that are held on campus. There is also an annual event called Snow Ball that is hosted by the Habitat for Humanity organization. It is usually held in mid-January in the SAU Cafeteria.

Tiki Bob’s Cantina

Tiki Bob’s used to be the home of Centers at High Falls, and while they still keep the basic setup with four dance clubs and one bar, some things have changed. There are parties held here most weekends, and if you know the name of the person whose party it is, you can score free drinks for the duration of the party, even if you don’t really know them.

The Bug Jar

The Bug is a local bar that has been around for quite some time. It’s a great place to go and relax with friends and have a drink in a very casual atmosphere. Live music is one of their best features. You can check out the infamous local band Disco Lobos here.

Pulse

This dual club/music hall is located just off RIT’s campus. The music at Pulse/Steel is mainly hip hop in the dance club, but the music hall plays host to live bands both locally and nationally known. The place can be packed and normally has a long line waiting at the door, so plan ahead, or come early, if you want to get in.

The Roost

The Roost is where you want to head if you are in the mood for a good old country bar. The Roost features line-dancing, and you can even get a lesson or two before you start. However, once you have a couple of drinks here, it doesn’t matter what you look like when you’re two-stepping (or three-stumbling for that matter).

Shamrock Jack’s

This little out of the way bar/restaurant is a nice cozy place that is perfect for a first date. The drinks are reasonably priced, and the atmosphere is very welcoming. You can even reserve a room to ensure you and your special someone can have some quality time alone.

4554 Culver Rd.

Rochester

(585) 323-9310

Milestones

Milestones is your best bet if you want good music and quality drinks for cheap prices. You can get in most nights for $10–$15, and hear the best live music that Rochester has to offer. This isn’t a bar where you drink to simply get drunk. Students mostly come for the music—the alcohol is just a perk.

170 East Ave.

Rochester

(585) 325-6490

Keys Martini and Piano Bar

Located in the High Falls area of downtown, the Martini Bar is considered by many as a priceless gem in the Rochester area. This fairly new and very trendy bar offers just what it claims: pianos and martinis. There are other drinks on the menu, but why not try one of their specialties?

MacGregor’s Grill and Tap Room

MacGregor’s is the bar of choice for most RIT students. It’s the only bar within walking distance of campus, and it offers pool tables and a wide selection of beer on tap.

What to Do if You're Not 21What's This?

House Parties

House parties are always an option if you are underage and want to drink. There are parties in the RIT apartments and in off-campus houses as well. Colony Manor is your best bet if you are looking for open parties, as many parties are invite only. It isn’t difficult to get invited to parties at RIT if you talk to people. There are usually parties going on every weekend if you ask around enough.

Spot Coffee

Spot is a great place to go if you aren’t into the bar and club scene. They are open quite late, and serve a variety of great coffees and baked goods. There is no age requirement or ID requirement to get in.

200 East Ave.

Rochester

(585) 613-4600

Canada

Going to Canada for the evening is an option if you have a car, and preferably, a designated driver. Rochester is within driving distance of Niagara Falls and the Canadian border. One perk of Canada is that the drinking age is only 19, so being underage isn’t as much of a concern.

Clubs

Many of the local clubs have 18-and-over nights—check with the clubs (or the local Insider newspaper) to find out which days they are.
