Rochester is an ideal area for food enthusiasts. There are many locally-owned and operated restaurants and food shops, all within a mile or two from the RIT campus. No matter what your diet consists of, you’ll find a restaurant that will suit your taste buds in or around Rochester. One of the best things about the restaurants in Rochester is that most of them are cheap. Many of the local establishments understand that there are a number of colleges in the area, and their menus, for the most part, cater to students’ wallets. While there are no establishments that advertise half-price food specials, most do offer nightly specials on both food and drinks. There are also numerous chain restaurants in the area that offer familiar options from back home, like Applebee’s or Olive Garden. If you don’t have a car and are limited to the restaurants that Rochester has to offer, you certainly won’t starve. Establishments like Mykonos and Dibella’s are a unique part of Rochester’s culture. Local restaurants allow students to socialize with the locals, and fortunately, most of them are quite hospitable. Also, it would be impossible to talk about food in Rochester without mentioning the most infamous food provider in the area: Wegman’s. Wegman’s is a grocery chain found in western New York and founded by Daniel Wegman, a Rochester native. You can find any kind of food you could possibly want in your local Wegman’s, from chips and snacks to the finest brands of seafood. If the local Wegman’s doesn’t have what you’re looking for, then just travel to Pittsford where the state’s largest Wegman’s store is located.
Last, but certainly not least, is Nick Tahou’s. Tahou’s is mostly known for its mouth-watering garbage plate. (Never thought I’d use mouth-watering and garbage in the same sentence.) There is only one actual Tahou’s in the Rochester area, but there are many imitators. The garbage plate is something that needs to be experienced to be fully appreciated. A base of macaroni salad and home fries is covered with hot sauce and onions, and then two cheeseburgers are placed on top, and some more hot sauce is thrown on. Doesn’t sound appealing to you? Try it, you’ll like it!

Dining
There are numerous restaurants near the campus. They range from fast food to sit down restaurants. Many of the restaurants accept Tiger Bucks from RIT making it very convenient for students to eat there. There is also a great variety.

Jay's Diner
If you're looking for a quick, fun, and close place to eat, check out Jay's Diner. It's less than 5 minutes away, and across from the dollar theatre (Movies Ten). Great for poor college students.
