College Prowler Take
Rochester is an ideal area for food enthusiasts. There are many locally-owned and operated restaurants and food shops, all within a mile or two from the RIT campus. No matter what your diet consists of, you’ll find a restaurant that will suit your taste buds in or around Rochester. One of the best things about the restaurants in Rochester is that most of them are cheap. Many of the local establishments understand that there are a number of colleges in the area, and their menus, for the most part, cater to students’ wallets. While there are no establishments that advertise half-price food specials, most do offer nightly specials on both food and drinks. There are also numerous chain restaurants in the area that offer familiar options from back home, like Applebee’s or Olive Garden. If you don’t have a car and are limited to the restaurants that Rochester has to offer, you certainly won’t starve. Establishments like Mykonos and Dibella’s are a unique part of Rochester’s culture. Local restaurants allow students to socialize with the locals, and fortunately, most of them are quite hospitable. Also, it would be impossible to talk about food in Rochester without mentioning the most infamous food provider in the area: Wegman’s. Wegman’s is a grocery chain found in western New York and founded by Daniel Wegman, a Rochester native. You can find any kind of food you could possibly want in your local Wegman’s, from chips and snacks to the finest brands of seafood. If the local Wegman’s doesn’t have what you’re looking for, then just travel to Pittsford where the state’s largest Wegman’s store is located. Last, but certainly not least, is Nick Tahou’s. Tahou’s is mostly known for its mouth-watering garbage plate. (Never thought I’d use mouth-watering and garbage in the same sentence.) There is only one actual Tahou’s in the Rochester area, but there are many imitators. The garbage plate is something that needs to be experienced to be fully appreciated. A base of macaroni salad and home fries is covered with hot sauce and onions, and then two cheeseburgers are placed on top, and some more hot sauce is thrown on. Doesn’t sound appealing to you? Try it, you’ll like it!

I love Philip’s European, it is really close to campus, and it is a great restaurant. The atmosphere is cozy, and it looks quite upscale, though you wouldn’t know it from the outside. The food is all really good, but the desserts are by far the best in Rochester. They serve homemade desserts that are making my mouth water as we speak. I always get an English trifle, but they have different cakes and pies and tortes—it’s all really good. |

I find it hard to get off campus without a car. Most of the good restaurants are downtown, so I don’t go that much. There are more recognizable chain restaurants close by like Olive Garden and Ruby Tuesday’s, but to get to any unique place, you need to go pretty far off campus. |

Lori’s Natural Foods is a great place to shop if you are a vegan. Wegman’s has a pretty good selection, but Lori’s has anything you could want, and the foods are all natural. There are a few vegan and vegetarian restaurants in town as well. |

If you like trying new types of food, then I would definitely recommend the King and I. They serve amazing Thai food. Aja has some pretty good Asian food that isn’t strictly Chinese. If you do like Chinese food, there are a lot of good restaurants around town. Pizza is hit-or-miss since most of the places are chains. They are okay, but I’m used to family-owned pizzerias. |

I haven’t gone to a fast food restaurant since I got to RIT, simply because you can get real food for the same price—if not cheaper. I love getting friends and heading downtown to try out new places. There are streets that have restaurants on literally ever corner—it’s great. |
