Safe Haven for Nerds
The main group of people on campus is made of nerds. I'm not trying to be rude, because I fully include myself in this group. RIT has an insane amount of advanced technology, so even by just going there you learn about it, whether you ever wanted to or not. I think the gaming, movies, inventions, etc. bring the campus community together. We have a large white and Indian population, but many people are accepting on campus no matter your background. The minority group that struggles most is probably those with a sexual orientation that differs from 'the norm'. RIT has a club to support those who are gay/lesbian/bisexual, but being friends with many who associate with the movement, I've found they don't feel a strong connection or network on campus. Also, RIT has a large deaf and hard-of-hearing population because of having NTID on the campus as well. There are a lot of mixed feelings toward these students, but the general idea of many hearing kids on school is that they are better than deaf or hard-of-hearing persons. Students all interact well but behind closed doors jokes are made that I feel shouldn't be a part of student interaction. Though there are many students who feel this way, I believe that the student body is working hard to mix students from all hearing realms together and teach them how to interact successfully.
