Quick Stats

Best Ways to Get Around Town

  • Bikes aren’t usually the best way to get around during the winter, but in the fall and spring, they work well—just don’t ride down the quarter mile, or you’ll get busted.
  • If you have a car, that’s great. If not, you’ll need to make friends with someone who does really fast. (If all else fails, ask your RA freshman year.)
  • RTS buses and shuttle buses to the movies, the mall, and Wegman’s are free on weekends with your ID.
  • Walking is always an option to get around to most of the local places. Even the mall is within walking distance.

How to Get to the Airport

  • A cab ride to the airport costs about $8.
  • Turn left on to Jefferson Road, turn right on to Scottsville Road, left on to Airport Road

College Prowler Take

Getting around Rochester is not terribly difficult once you get to know the area. If you are planning on driving around, you should invest in an inexpensive city map available at any local bookstore and many grocery stores as well. If you don’t have a car, don’t worry. Students at RIT are far from trapped on campus. RTS is a cheap and an easy way to get around the city. There are multiple buses that run on campus. There are also shuttles that run to Wegman’s and the mall as well. From there, it is easy to pick up connections to the main routes.

If you are looking to get out of town there are many choices for transportation. The Rochester International Airport is located right next to campus (about a five-minute drive), and is serviced by all major airlines. The Greyhound bus terminal is located in the downtown area and has connections available in NYC for the rest of the country. The Amtrak station is also downtown and has service to all major cities in NY, as well as connections to most other areas. All of these providers have reasonable rates to get you where you want to go. If you join the Student Advantage program, you can get discounts on your travel as well. Information about this program is available through the college, as well as many local businesses that use the program.

RIT transportation is very convenient. I take the bus to classes and to the mall on weekends. It doesn’t cost me anything, and I can get to where I need to go. The buses have a tendency to run late, though, so I just make sure that I catch the one that is earlier than when I actually need to be somewhere. This way, I’m not late.

Transportation is pretty good in this area. While having a car is still the easiest way to get places, the cabs are usually pretty reasonable. The shuttle buses are a great alternative to driving. They are clean and comfortable, and go most places you would want to go in the city.

Free Buses, Airport Is 4 Miles from Campus, Parking Lots Generally Available

A+

One of the best features of RIT is the transportation network in place for students. Buses run consistently on time all day from very early morning (7AM) till late night (2AM). Buses to on and off campus locations are all free. Access to the airport is extremely convenient and the Rochester Airport has just completed renovations making it a reasonable travel option for anyone.

Rochester airport is really nice—it’s clean and runs efficiently. I have never had a problem flying into or out of there. The security takes a little while, but I don’t mind the wait.

Living next to the airport makes travel a whole lot easier. You can get to the airport in a matter of moments, and cab fare is quite reasonable. The school runs a shuttle to the airport for breaks, too, which is great because then you don’t have to pay to get there.

The Greyhound bus terminal is in the heart of downtown Rochester in the Midtown Plaza. It takes about 20 minutes to get there in fairly steady traffic. Be careful trying to get to the station itself, since it is mainly one way streets, and it is easy to get turned around. Make sure to give yourself extra time the first time you head down.
