Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The athletic department at Rollins receives a minimal amount of attention. Rollins certainly has many exceptional athletes, and varsity teams often rank well in their divisions; however, students don’t usually have a clue when it comes to Rollins athletics. Since there is not a football team at Rollins, students lack the same school spirit found at other schools, where students treat sports games as their primary social events. Rollins has an abundance of sports teams such as baseball, basketball, soccer, lacrosse, tennis, golf, volleyball, cross country, rowing, softball, sailing, water skiing, and swimming. Student athletes are very dedicated to their teams, and without a doubt, they deserve more attention and more support.

On the contrary, intramural sports are quite popular at Rollins. Students who do not have as much time to dedicate to a varsity team often join an intramural sport. Because Rollins doesn’t have a football team, many students take advantage of the intramural football team. There are many ways for students to get involved with athletics, whether they want to join a varsity team or just play a pickup game of beach volleyball.

Football Isn't as Important as Many Think

Although we do not have a Division II Football team, the Tars have a total of 23 varsity sports including Soccer, Lacrosse, Tennis, Basketball, and Rowing. We have strong school spirit and a wonderful mascot, Tommy the Tar, which always appears at the Soccer games.

Most Popular Sports

Baseball and soccer are two of the most popular varsity sports. The men’s soccer team has a huge following and regularly packs the stands on big-game nights. Of the intramural sports, flag football gets a lot of people involved, perhaps because it’s the closest thing to a football team here. Volleyball draws a fair number of participants, as well.

Most Overlooked Teams

A lot of the women’s teams are just as talented or more so than the men’s, but they don’t receive as much acclaim as the men’s teams.

School Spirit

School spirit is present at Rollins but not abundantly so. Many students are proud to go to Rollins, yet they fail to get actively involved. The lack of attendance at varsity and intramural games reveals this.

Getting Tickets

Tickets are easily obtained and never sold out. For most events, you can get in for free, but for the few that charge, it is a minimal price.
