Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Rollins requires students with fewer than 60 semester hours to live on campus, which means most freshmen and sophomores live in the dorms. When comparing the residence halls to the rest of Rollins, dorm life is definitely struggling. A couple of the dorms have recently been renovated, and these are the dorms students should fight for. Ward Hall and Rex Beach Hall were both redone in the last couple of years. McKean Hall is the notorious freshman party dorm, and despite the filth, it is definitely the most fun dorm and the best place to meet people. Sophomores who joined a sorority or fraternity usually live in their sorority or fraternity house, as living in a Greek house is the same cost as living in a dorm. Sophomores who choose not to live in the sorority or fraternity house have the option of living in Sutton Place Apartments. Students who live in Sutton are chosen through a lottery system, which takes class year and GPA into account. Living in Sutton is nice because you have your own kitchen and living room; however, it is very far from everything on campus. There are upcoming renovation plans for more dorms on campus and within the next five years or so, they should all be looking good as new.

Dorm life is an important part of the college experience. Most people meet their friends in the dorms and party in the dorms, as well. It is quite easy to drink in the dorm rooms with a small group of friends, but if it is loud, your RA is likely to break it up. Students who live in Sutton throw parties, but campus security is also pretty strict there, as well. Dorms are an essential part of college, and every dorm at Rollins has its pros and cons.

Great Either Way

The freshman dorms are not as good as the upperclassmen dorms. However, it is a great experience to go through. They are right in the middle of the campus and are a great way to get more comfortable in the school.

Depends on Where You Live

The first year dorms range from living at a hotel (Ward and Rex Beach) to staying at a motel (McKean). Yet, I've been told from visiting students from other colleges that even McKean is gorgeous. As a first year you will not be allowed to pick your dorm, but upperclassmen have a much better range of options. Holt is mostly singles, Elizabeth is a traditional dorm, and Sutton is apartment-style living. The dorms are quite clean and while the showers have low pressure to save water, the hot water never runs out.

Dorms Make for an Easier College Experience

The on campus living is much easier than living off campus. The dorms are relatively big and the apartment style dorms are very big in comparison. Everything is mostly clean most of the time and the social atmosphere is a lot easier. Everyone is pretty trustworthy, so theft is uncommon.
