Quick Stats

School Slang
  • Blackboard: Teachers can post materials and grades online through the Blackboard log-in section.
  • The Boot: If you get too many parking tickets, beware of the yellow boot! Campus Safety puts these immobilizing devices on offending vehicles.
  • CCC: The Cornell Campus Center. This is the main student center, and inside is the cafeteria, Dave’s Down Under, and the C-Store.
  • The C-Store: The grocery store on campus. It is located in Dave’s Down Under, and students can use their meal plan money there.
  • Dave’s Down Under: Located on the bottom level of the CCC, this section hosts movie showings, talent shows, and more. The Grille is also located in Dave's Down Under.
  • Dom's: Domino's Pizza
  • Flex: Separate from the meal plan, students can place money on their “flex” account for buying food, bookstore items, and doing laundry.
  • Fox Day: The one day of the year students are given all classes off and encouraged to head to the beach; it's signified by a fox statue on the lawn.
  • Gazebos: All around the lake, there are gazebos designed for relaxing and doing work (they have Internet access, too).
  • Holt: The night school at Rollins; arts and science students can also cross-enroll there.
  • Johnson Center: This is often considered the most difficult classroom cluster to find. It is in the psychology center, located inside of the Bush Science Center, on the first floor.
  • Purple Jesus: Grain alcohol and Kool-Aid—a fraternity staple.
  • R-Card: Each student is issued an R-Card upon arrival. It is used to purchase meals, to act as an ID, and to enter the parking garage.
  • Sevies: The 7-Eleven across from campus—always a popular late-night spot.
  • TJ’s: The Thomas P. Johnson Student Resource Center. Go there for help on a paper or for studying for a test.
Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To School
  • All of the girls are beautiful, and the guys are arrogant and stuck-up.
  • Be prepared to study a lot.
  • Don’t bring many winter clothes.
  • Find a roommate on Facebook or through another social network! It is better to find a roommate you have something in common with than a complete stranger.
  • Get involved with your RCC (Rollins College Conference) class.
  • Go to most of the orientation events.
  • Go to the parties to meet people.
  • Mostly everyone is wealthy—and they dress to prove it.
  • Plan to party a lot.
  • Rush, even if you don’t want to go Greek.
  • Take advantage of TJ's.
  • Use the library.
Tips to Succeed
  • Don't party every night! So many people fail out after freshman year.
  • Go to class! Even if there isn’t an attendance policy, go.
  • Organize your time well.
  • Sign up for classes that really interest you.
  • Step outside of your intended major to try a class or two on something totally unfamiliar to you.
  • Try to average 17.5 hours a semester so you don’t fall behind.
  • Use the library.
  • Use TJ’s; it can never hurt your grade and generally helps.

House Parties and Club

House parties and clubs are a big part of Rollins life. There is always a house party going on somewhere if you know where to look. Also the club scene is big tuesday and thursday nights. The bar scene at Fids is pretty chill and close to campus. Park ave pizza is always going on and you can get pitchers there for you and your friends. Park ave is also full of restaurants. Also be sure to check out the wakeboard club, they know whats up.

Smaller Is Actually Better

I love that Rollins is such a small school because I feel like I know a huge percentage of the student body. The faculty is incredible and it is very easy to get involved in whatever you like to do at Rollins.

Facts

Traditions
  • Bach Festival: Rollins is a part of the highly-acclaimed Winter Park Bach Festival Society. This society is the third oldest continuously operating Bach Festival in the United States. The Bach Festival Society performs in the Knowles Memorial Chapel on campus and holds almost weekly events that draw large crowds of music lovers.
  • Fox Day: Fox Day is everyone’s favorite tradition at Rollins. Once a year, in the spring, the current president puts out a fox statue on Mills Lawn to cancel classes for the day. Everyone piles into cars and sometimes organizations get buses to head to Cocoa Beach. The frats bring kegs and the beach turns into a huge Rollins party. After a long day of swimming, Frisbee, drinking, and sunbathing, students head back burned but very relaxed. Fox Day is always a success, and it is so highly anticipated that students begin to look for the fox at dawn on mornings early in the spring semester.
  • Greek Week: All of the fraternities and sororities compete in daily challenges during Greek Week. The competitions range from creating posters to building and sailing boats. It is an exciting week for both Greek and non-Greek students, as the events are always entertaining and fun to watch.
  • Halloween Howl: To celebrate Halloween and reach out to the youth of Winter Park, Rollins organizations create fun booths and games for the annual Halloween Howl event. Mills Lawn becomes a sea of outlandish costumes and excited children as they celebrate Halloween in a safe and entertaining manner.
  • PeaceJam: Rollins is honored to bring the national program PeaceJam to campus each year. This program brings in youth of the community for a weekend of working with a Nobel Peace Prize recipient. The children participate in leadership-building activities, as well as creating and presenting a plan of action to improve a problem they see in their community. The Nobel Prize recipient (which varies by year) also addresses the Rollins community in a lecture open to all interested in attending.
  • Winter with the Writers : Each year, Rollins hosts the Winter with the Writers program, which brings distinguished authors to campus weekly. The authors give readings, lectures, and offer workshops open to students, faculty, and staff. Rollins actually offers a class that prepares for these authors and introduces them at lectures.
Urban Legends
  • Carrot Top hangs out at the Rollins pool and hits on the college girls.
  • Former president Rita Bornstein was actually a robot.
  • In 2004, a deranged man went into the Rollins parking garage and smashed more than 40 cars. Rumor has it he was fired from Rollins earlier that day.
  • Legend has it that years ago, a girl from a small farming town who was accustomed to outhouses refused to use the toilets at Rollins. She instead defecated in paper bags and stashed them in her room. The smell was detected, but no one discovered her indoor “toilet” until the end-of-the-year clean-up!
  • Rollins is a country club.
  • They used to sell kegs in the C-Store, and you could charge them on your R-Card and send the bill home to Mom and Dad.
