Famous RU Alumni

Mario Batali (Class of ’82) – Batali majored in Spanish theater at Rutgers, but later went on to be a celebrity on the Food Network.
Patricia Smith Campbell
(Class of ’63) – Campbell pioneered the development of technologies that today allow millions of people to receive safe, painless treatments by using adhesive patches to deliver a controlled dose of medicine through the skin. This procedure made popular drug patches, such as Nicoderm CQ for cigarette addiction. Her discoveries have resulted in 23 patents for medical products and processes that have improved human health around the world.
Deron Cherry (Class of ‘81) – While Cherry was at Rutgers, he was a co-captain of the Scarlet Knights in 1980, and was inducted into the Rutgers Football Hall of Fame. Later, he went on to become one of the first African Americans to co-own a professional NFL football team, the Jacksonville Jaguars. He also raised the bar on professional sports by becoming the NFL’s highest paid defensive back in the late 1980s, with an $850,000 annual salary.
Calista Flockhart
(Class of ’88) – Flockhart is best known for Ally McBeal on the long running television show on Fox, of which she won a Best Actress Golden Globe Award and was nominated for an Emmy for her work. She has also appeared in the Broadway shows The Glass Menagerie and the off-Broadway play Bash.
James Gandolfini
(Class of ’83) – The popular Sopranos star once majored in communication at Rutgers University. Later, he took an acting class, which may have helped him win multiple Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe. He actively supports Rutgers athletics, and is often seen at the games.
Sandra Guzman
(Class of ‘85) – Guzman served as editor-in-chief of Latina, the first national bilingual lifestyle magazine for the U.S. Hispanic market. She received an Emmy for her Telemundo special on the U.S. Cuban embargo.
