College Prowler Take
Students actually shudder when they see a RUPD car drive by. It seems as though everyone has a bad experience with the campus police, whether it be from parking tickets, Jaywalking tickets, tickets from noise violations, or a bad memory of when they broke up a house party. The RUPD is known to be ticket-happy, but they tend to leave you alone when drunk, unless you are completely obliterated and can’t walk home.
In the residence halls, freshman dorms seem to get the worst shaft. Preceptors constantly have an eye out to catch the first years drinking, smoking, or doing other drugs in their rooms. “Quiet hours” are the number one thing to get written up for freshman year. After midnight on the weekends and 11 p.m. on the weekdays, students have to close their doors if friends are over, music is playing, or if the TV is on. During finals, 24-hour quiet hours begin; here, no student can make any loud noises at any time during the day. If the quiet hours are ever broken, the student has to complete community service hours, typically in the dining hall or by participating in a monthly hall program, such as board game night. More students are written up for noise violations than drinking or drug problems in the dorms. Off campus, there are always lots of parties, and unless a neighbor complains about rowdiness, the RUPD leaves you alone. Rutgers is extremely strict with campus parking, and on-campus drug use, but everything else they tend to let slide.

All the frats have parties on the weekends, and the police have to know that there’s alcohol being served. They leave you alone, as long as it’s not insanely rowdy and people aren’t complaining of noise violations. |

The police are very strict about drugs and crack down on those that choose to do them. Drinking is not enforced very strictly, mostly because it’s hard to enforce and there are so many underage drinkers. |

I’ve never come across a strict police officer when I was out drinking. But my friend did get arrested for false identity. |

There’s zero-tolerance. Drinking—they’re a little more lenient with. Just don’t do it in front of them or with the door open in your dorm. Be careful in freshman dorms because they’re always on the lookout for first years drinking. |
