College Prowler Take

When the server goes down, students walk aimlessly around the halls with a lost look on their faces, unable to communicate with the real world. Facebook status messages are a pivotal part of RU student life. With all of the different campuses at Rutgers, it is a way of keeping in touch with friends on different campuses. Facebook and consistent e-mail checking are definitely a big part of RU culture. The majority of Rutgers professors require students to use their Eden accounts to send in homework or online quizzes. Sakai is another program that students log into for course notes, teacher comments, and an online bulletin board. Also, Internet courses are offered that require students to post discussion materials, as well as papers. When the end of the semester rolls around, students have to schedule classes for the following semester online. At 10 p.m. on “add day,” students all around Rutgers run to their computers to try and log onto Webreg, the Registrar’s site, to add classes—a task that takes about an hour since everyone logs in at the same time.

No one at Rutgers should ever bring a printer because the labs print faster and are of better quality. I haven’t met a student that didn’t have their own computer, though. If you can’t bring a computer, labs are available to do work or to play games on. Many students talk on their cell phones in the labs, so if you need to work in a quiet environment, your best bet is to bring your own computer. Besides, at such a big university, it’ll become your surrogate best friend.

Personally, I think that having your own computer is very convenient and beneficial. However, there are computer labs on every campus. They are open all night, and there are enough computers in the lab so that students never have to wait.

There are many computer labs, but many students don’t even know that they exist. They can be very useful, especially for printing articles and long papers, but having your own computer is a big plus if you can bring one. It allows you to access information instantly from the Internet in your room (if you live on campus) to check e-mails and write papers.

Ninety-nine percent of Rutgers students are addicted to Facebook. I’ve even spoken to my roommate on Facebook, and her desk is about four feet away from my computer.

You don’t have to bring your own computer, but most students do because it’s just more convenient. If you don’t have one, there are lots of computer labs that are spread across the different campuses. The lines are never bad, unless it’s around midterms or finals, where there can be a 10- to 20-minute wait to print.

I would definitely recommend bringing your own computer. The computer labs tend to be crowded and slightly noisy. I find it easier to be more productive in my own room or buying a laptop and taking it to the library. As for buying a printer, save your money and take advantage of doing your printing in the computer lab; you pay for it in your tuition anyway.
