College Prowler Take
Many students at Rutgers choose to live off campus after their freshman year. Primarily, they want a place they can live at during the summer and winter breaks, as well as a single room, private bathrooms, and a place to party without the watchful eyes of the RAs. There is a large surplus of housing available off campus, but it is always safe to start looking early in the second semester. The cleanest apartments and houses tend to get taken first. The longer you wait on your quest for an off-campus house, the grosser it may be. The best way to find a great off-campus house or apartment is to become friends with seniors who are graduating. However, students who choose to live off campus have to deal with the security issues that come along with it. It is safer to live on campus where the residence halls are locked, unless a student opens the door with their student ID. Room and board fees also pay for maintenance problems making life a little bit easier and safer. Off-campus houses do not always have secure doors and windows, and landlords aren’t always quick to fix them—or the other things in the house that may break. Also, on-campus housing supplies you with a fast Ethernet connection, a desk, bed, and other amenities, and off-campus housing supplies you with an empty house.

Since Rutgers is so big, it's easy to find an off-campus house near one of the campuses. It's cheaper to live off campus than on. Everyone I know who lives off campus absolutely loves the independence.

Why would you live in downtown New Brunswick where all sorts of crime happens when you can be with your friends in a safe dorm? |

They’re not safe, and the landlords don’t take care of things. It’s much better to live on campus because Rutgers will come and fix things if stuff breaks. |

It can be really convenient. I’m closer to my classes, now, off campus than I ever was when I was on campus. |

There’s enough houses for anyone who wants to go off campus, but it’s a pain; there are too many bills. |
