College Prowler Take
Security is definitely a prevalent problem at Rutgers University. Administration addresses the problems and tries to change procedures to keep up with the changes in the environment, but crime still plagues the University. RUPD says that the major crime on and off campus is theft, the same as the rest of American universities. Since New Brunswick is a city, and College Avenue is not an enclosed campus, it is important to take the same safety measures you would in any city. Never walk alone at night, even if you are a male, and look assertive when you are walking somewhere. On the other campuses, walk along major streets instead of shortcuts behind the dorms. It may take longer to get somewhere, but it is definitely a precaution all students should take. While moving into Rutgers, keep an eye on your belongings. Everyone is moving in, so it is hard to recognize who shouldn’t be there. In the past, computers, stereos, and other valuables were stolen during these days. Also, don’t leave your things unoccupied in dining halls and student centers. Police are definitely seen around the campuses during the day, but they cannot see every single thing that goes on. Many students openly admit that they don’t feel safe off campus and are extremely upset about how the RUPD do their jobs. RU Safety is often a controversial subject on campus, and e-mails reporting theft and other crimes fill students’ Eden accounts while police ticket jaywalkers.

With a huge campus, there are few incidences of crime at Rutgers. However, if you just keep alert with your eyes and your ears open, walk with friends at night, and just use common sense, you should be fine.

We always get e-mails about the stuff that goes on like rapes, thefts, attacks; obviously, something is wrong at Rutgers. I don’t understand why these crimes are still happening and why the President doesn’t address it as a very serious problem. |

I live off campus on Lafayette Street, and I feel completely safe. However, the area surrounding Cook campus can be pretty dangerous. I have had no problems with security thus far. |

Safety is horrible; I’ve heard many stories of friends being mugged and jumped. Safety is getting better, although the police tend to care more about a student drinking alcohol on the street than a fight breaking out. |
Did You Know?Rutgers University established the Community Service Officer Program in July 2000 to provide support and assistance to the police. One-hundred trained and uniformed students patrol the streets along the Cook and Douglass campuses, as well as bicycle paths on College Avenue. New Brunswick is nicknamed “the Health Care City” because Robert Wood Johnson Hospital, St. Peters University Hospital, and the Johnson & Johnson Global Headquarters are located in town. Security officer escorts are available daily from 7 p.m. to 2 a.m. Students who wish to be escorted to their residence hall, car, or off-campus home can call (732) 932-7211 for this free service.
