College Prowler Take

It seems as though every Rutgers student, both male and female, owns a black sweatshirt with "RUTGERS" embroidered in fiery red thread. This sweatshirt is worn religiously throughout the winter and any time it rains in the warmer months. The weather during the fall semester is typical of the east coast. September begins with high temperatures and ends with lower. During move-in day, students normally wear T-shirts and light pants and shorts. By the end of September, the infamous Rutgers sweatshirt begins its circulation.

The weather certainly fluctuates throughout the year. It may be over 90 degrees during the first week of classes, and then the winter may be brutal enough for snow day, which Rutgers is notorious for not ever giving. Students often joke that living in New Brunswick or Piscataway sometimes feels like Biblical times, as it often rains for a week straight. Rain at Rutgers is an incredibly annoying occurrence. Students have to wait for buses in the rain and then ride them in dead stop traffic, making them late to class. Tremendous puddles form in New Brunswick streets, so be prepared. The spring semester at Rutgers begins cold but ends with students sunbathing on towels in front of their dorms. And, like at most colleges, flip-flops are essential items for your wardrobe.

The spring and fall are a lot milder, with the weather ranging from warm to cool. New Jersey also seems to always either be flooding from consistent raining, or in a drought from lack of rain. If you’re at Rutgers during one of the wet spells, you don’t want to be without your rain gear. Basically, no matter what clothes you bring, there will be the weather to wear it.

New Jersey’s climate promises a little bit of this and a little bit of that. If you’re coming to Rutgers, you better be prepared to dress for it all. Summers tend to be hot, so at the beginning of the fall semester and the end of the spring semester you want to have warm- weather clothing with you to avoid sweating to death in lecture. Winters, on the other hand, tend to be very cold and occasionally snowy. The wind chill can dip into the teens and 20s, which makes for some very chilly weather while you wait at the bus stop for your bus to show up. And if you have to dig your car out of a parking lot/parking space/etc., you’re going to want to be bundled up (and owning a shovel wouldn’t hurt either). So pack your sweaters, gloves, and long johns.

I suggest not loading up on winter stuff if you live within a couple hours of the school, it usually stays pretty warm until at least October. Then once it starts to get colder, you switch your wardrobe. And in the winter it can get extremely cold. Snow boots are a must, because of the walking you do on each campus.
