Overall ExperienceWhat's This?

The courses are tough at Rutgers. TAs mainly don’t speak English, and you can never find a parking spot. However, despite these things, after the first week of your freshman year, you realize Rutgers is different than other schools. Diversity is definitely something that makes Rutgers stand out—the friends you will meet at Rutgers will make you realize that you like Indian music and Persian food, and
you’ll go to friends houses during their Jewish holidays. Students will learn to live with all different people, despite different backgrounds, and smile and laugh the nights away in the dorms.

It is a very large university, and professors won’t realize or care if you are failing a course. However, students remark that they wanted to attend a large university because it makes them grow up. At Rutgers, no one holds your hand as you pick courses (and there’s 4,000 to choose from), and they don’t make sure you are taking the courses necessary for your major. Everything is done by the actions of the students. If you want real life experiences instead of a college resembling your high school, you’ll find it here.

EASY

To become a Spanish major, I simply went to a website online and elected the choice. It could not have been easier. The department faculty are also extremely friendly and helpful. I have heard negative things about larger departments with getting help, though (such as math and biology).

Must Be Obvious to Be Caught

Although some students are unlucky with being caught underage drinking/doing other illegal things, for the most part a student can get away with just about anything if they are discreet about it. Especially be careful when living in the dorms. Do not play beer pong or get kegs, because pong balls are easily heard through the walls and a keg is ridiculous. There are plenty of house parties, clubs, and bars available so students do not have to risk much.
