Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Rutgers University is not a small university where you can roll out of bed and walk to class in pajamas. Typically, students have to take Rutgers’s long red bus to class. Sometimes, students try to schedule their classes on the campus where they live, while others are not as lucky. Rutgers’s buses are tracked on the Web site www.nextbus.com. Students check to see where on campus their bus is, so they do not have to wait outside for it to come. Also, at the bus stop, there is an electronic board, which lets students know when each bus is coming. Buses run almost every seven minutes, and after 3 a.m., students can call the Knight Mover, known to students as the drunk bus, to pick them up and take them to a requested location. NJ Transit buses are also available in downtown New Brunswick. The New Brunswick bus station is across the street from the official Rutgers’ bookstore. Running on the North East Corridor Line, students can buy a round-trip ticket to New York City for $13. Many courses at Rutgers require students to attend art museums or plays in Manhattan.

The bus system at Rutgers is often tiring, but it is the only way that students can get to classes. Typically, the buses are safe. The buses are always crowded during student rush hour, which is typically around 2:30 p.m., a popular class time. During this time, students struggle to find seats on the bus, while others stand and hold onto the rails for dear life as the accordion bus swings the corners.

Rutgers Busses Aren't as Bad as You Think

Sure, around rush hour, you might have to pack onto the bus like sardines. And weekend schedules can be irritating. But if you think about the scale of the Rutgers Bus System, they accomplish a great deal for their students, and they are constantly improving their efficiency. The buses are regular, convenient, and totally free. And I certainly don't know what I would do without them.

Convenience on Getting to Classes on Time

In terms of convenience, the buses are the best way to go to get to classes. To get from one campus to another, it takes about 15-25 minutes. Depending on how traffic goes, it can go faster or longer. The bus stops are within 5-10 minutes to get to your specific building walking-distance. There will be a few times when the buses will leave without even stopping, but usually there will be another bus in another 5 minutes. NextBus also helps in figuring out when the bus will come. There are a few times when the times are inaccurate, but it's generally reliable. Also, the buses can get really crowded, but if you see an empty seat, take it. If not, just try to get in the best you can. If there are open spaces to stand, move in so other people can get on the bus. You wouldn't like it yourself if there is a huge gap of space and nobody was moving to make room for others to get on.

Need to Improve the Bus

Well if you live on campus your lucky you can ride the bus from campus to campus. However, if you live a mile away off campus the bus will not come to you. Not even the bus for persons with disabilities.
