College Prowler Take

The easiest drug to obtain here is alcohol. Sac State students drink more than they do anything else. However, the administration and security work hard to curb it, and the campus is actually below the national average for college drinking. This makes Sac State look good in press releases, but a lot of people still drink alcohol in pretty healthy quantities. Then there’s marijuana. If you’re a Sac State student who doesn’t smoke pot, chances are you know someone who does. If you think otherwise, you’re one of a small few, or someone’s been lying to you. There are quite a few cigarette smokers too, but it’s becoming harder and harder for them to fulfill their habit on campus. Every few semesters, a new regulation comes out restricting where people can smoke at school. Technically, you can’t smoke inside buildings, on busy walkways, within 20 feet of buildings or doorways, or in mobile equipment driving through campus; so, basically, you can’t smoke anywhere. Hardcore drugs are less popular with students, but they exist as well. A lot of people talk about meth, and a few about cocaine. Dealers operate away from campus, for the most part, but users and dealers both come to school. And, of course, there is caffeine, which is very easy to come by on campus because of the unlimited supply of Java Cities. Why people think students need so much coffee is a mystery to all.

The only experience I have had has been light marijuana usage, although there could be more that I don’t know about.

I think it just deals with who your friends are. I haven’t seen many drugs on campus. However, students seemed too open about other things.

Not as bad as at my former school. The occasional pothead is often seen, but the dealers tend to run things off campus. Even the new policies on cigarette smoking have lessened the sightings of users.

With all of these Java Cities...

With all of these Java Cities around, I’m pretty sure caffeine’s one of them. Caffeine’s kind of an invisible drug that slides under the radar. Because it’s common, people don’t think of it as a widely used drug, but it is. It doesn’t have the stigma of pot or crack, so no one refers to it as a big bad drug, but they should. Look at how many people drink coffee and soda.
