Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Varsity sports are dominated by the men’s basketball team. Coach Phil Martelli is slowly becoming a Philadelphia icon, and Sports Illustrated has named attending a basketball game at St. Joe’s fieldhouse as one of its top 10 things for a sports fan to do in their lifetime. Women’s basketball also has a larger spotlight on it than other sports, most likely because of where they play their games. Men’s and women’s crew have recently become more popular, and students have started making the trek down to Philly’s famous Boathouse Row on the Schuylkill River where the races are held. Students also say that the school needs more fields on campus because they don’t know where half of the teams play their games. This is interesting because two of the most popular clubs sports—rugby and ice hockey—host games a good distance from campus. The recently purchased Merion campus, which previously hosted Episcopal Academy, has a football field as well as other multi-purpose fields and an indoor gym.

It’s surprising how many fellow students are on a sports team. Supporting friends’ teams is always fun, regardless of whether it is varsity, club, or intramural. Outside of the annual trip to Madison Square Garden, no matter what sport you’re into, the most fun St. Joe’s students have is after games, whether it is rugby or Whiffleball, with kegs in Fairmont Park.

Athletics at SJU

SJU has a lot of different sports teams and a lot of school spirit. If that is something that you are interested in then this would be a good school for you.

Basketball...

SJU is OVERFLOWING with school spirit. Everywhere you go on campus you can probably find at least three people wearing something SJU-related. The school spirit at basketball games is also overwhelming. Basketball is our main focus in terms of sports and it definitely shows.

Most Popular Sports

On the varsity level, the basketball teams (both men’s and women’s) are the most well-known on campus. All of the IM sports are very popular, especially flag football, where the winner goes on to compete against other tournament winners throughout the city. Rugby clearly has the largest presence out of club sports, with the women playing on ESPN2 a couple of years ago and the men always putting together a competitive team.

Most Overlooked Teams

Women’s field hockey is looking to make an impact in the future, and club ice hockey would very much like to become varsity.

School Spirit

Saint Joseph’s is steeped in tradition, and its students bleed crimson and gray, as do alumni. This fierce pride is evident in the school’s motto: “The Hawk will never die.” SJU clothing adorns even the most indifferent sports fan. Students are proud to tell people where they go to school, and support for sporting events is not the extent. Students regularly come out to support student bands and even student comedians. The relationship between alumni and current students is remarkable as well. Even though St. Joe’s doesn’t have a traditional homecoming weekend due to its lack of a football team, it’s definitely not uncommon to find alumni walking the campus on any given day.

Getting Tickets

You don’t need tickets to most sporting events, except for basketball. Students must apply for a lottery to receive a chance at partial- or full-season ticket packages.
