Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Like most major private universities in recent years, St. Joe’s has had to deal with issues of tolerance and diversity. Many students at St. Joe’s say the school is more diverse than the numbers show because they don’t take into account many factors, and many say the system is outdated. While it’s true the majority of the campus is white, most students are quick to point out their specific backgrounds, and that everyone is not a trust-fund baby or Abercrombie-wearing white kid. Many culturally diverse organizations are starting up all the time on campus, such as the predominantly African American step team.

St. Joe’s Jesuit education promotes tolerance, which can be seen in the student population and the continued expansion of culturally diverse classes. The school itself is expanding culturally, and although the current numbers may not express diversity, the welcoming atmosphere of the school and students earn the University a high mark. Aside from the St. Joe’s students, there is also a very diverse population in the surrounding areas. West Philly is predominately African American, while a large percentage of Overbrook Farms is Jewish. Philadelphia overall has a large African American and Irish/Italian Catholic working-class population. St. Joe’s students have traditionally incorporated themselves into this larger diverse community very well in the past.

Diversity Is Needed

Saint Joe's can be mainly perceived as a "white campus". To be completely honest, the minorities on this campus are few and far between and very almost impossible to find. My school is an expensive, catholic school. Consequently, almost all the students come from wealthy parents, dress in nice clothes, and walk with their nose in the air.

Embracing Diversity

The campus definitely encourages the students to be accepting of all people. We have plenty of seminars that teach students ways to incorporate diversity in their lives. However, the school itself is not very diverse. But since I work in the Admissions Office for my work study job, I do know that the conselors are definitely trying to change that.

Facts

Gay Pride

The campus is very tolerant of gays and lesbians. Programs such as SafeZone and Unity Week are strong examples of this.

Political Activity

Although the school is Roman Catholic in faith, the student body tends to be mixed as far as political views, with a slight tilt toward liberalism. Young Republicans and Democrats debate weekly in the school’s newspaper.

Economic Status

St. Joe’s has students from a variety of economic backgrounds. Many students earn scholarships, are on work studies, or earn room and board by being an RA. However, it is a predominantly white school, and like most colleges, there is that group with the typical Abercrombie & Fitch look.

Most Common Religions

Catholic; there is a chapel on campus where some students have made Sunday night mass a popular destination.

Minority Clubs on Campus

There are a number of minority clubs including the Multicultural Society and the Indian Diwali Club.
