Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

St. Joe’s is a college campus like most others. Don’t leave your iPod, laptop, wallet, or anything else of value in plain view in a public place when you’re not going to be attending to them. That being said, students agree they feel very safe when on campus. Security guards, police, and City Avenue Patrol all cover the grounds 24 hours a day, and the school is almost entirely fenced in. Real emergencies are always answered briskly by security, which has improved its response time and recently updated some equipment. Security added new Honda CR-Vs to its arsenal of vehicles, which already included escort vans, shuttle buses, full-size buses, and Jeeps.

The ex-police officer who heads St. Joe’s security has recently made efforts with the school to increase security presence in and around the campus and surrounding neighborhoods. There is constantly an officer on Cardinal Avenue, a popular place for students without parking decals to park. Additionally, security routinely patrols campus and the immediate streets around campus at night. One thing St. Joe’s students often complain about is that security guards tend to be a little overzealous with their ticketing pads when it comes to parking, and this is true to an extent. The parking situation, though not good, has improved, and with students parking in less obnoxiously illegal places, the guards have relaxed their ticketing a bit.

Not Enough Security

There are blue ligths round campus and walking security. We also have updates on our website homepage that talk about crimes in the area. There are still several armed robberies and assaults on and around campus. I do not feel safe walking on campus at night unless I am in a very large group.

Technically Part of the City, but in a Great Neighborhood

I have never had any trouble with safety on campus, but it is important to remember that SJU is part of the city. Common sense is always a good companion. The Public Safety officials do their jobs well, but mostly stick to following up on complaints and serving as late-night escort drivers. The escort shuttles are great for getting to and from campus, especially when not living in one of the dorms after sophomore year. Most of the Public Safety guys are really great, especially if you maintain a pleasant and respectful attitude around them.
