Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Philadelphia was once the nation’s capital and was home to many of our nation’s founding fathers. However, there is much more to Philly than old cobblestone streets and statues of Ben Franklin. The city is alive and burgeoning with new growth in all aspects of life. Philly is made up of a major business district as well as thriving nightlife and entertainment including art, music, and sporting events. St. Joe’s fully encourages students to participate in the local atmosphere by running trips to the art museums and Phillies and 76ers games.

Philadelphia has a distinct character in its city and people. Some will complain that it’s not as big as New York, but that is often beneficial to younger college students. The city is definitely large enough to explore over and over again and not get bored, yet it’s not so impossibly large that one can never actually see all of it. Plus, surrounding St. Joe’s is a sense of suburbia mixed with urban life. Public transportation is particularly convenient with the Overbrook train station and City Line Avenue’s Septa buses nearby. More than 15 colleges and universities call Philadelphia and Delaware counties home, which makes for a large population of college-aged students. At St. Joe’s, students get access to a major city but are also able to avoid the hassle of living directly in a city atmosphere.

Overbrook/City Ave

This is probably one of the nicer parts of West Philly, but its still west philly. Gets a tiny bit shady at night but public safety is okay. Most burglaries happen from 12(literally)-17 year olds preying on stupid rich kids from out of state. It happens, but not if you're smart. The neighborhood folk in overbrook and manayunk pretty much hate us but don't get in the way much. Plus the city is really accessible with overbrook station (Nova/Drexel/UPenn/Temple within 20 mins.

Best of Both Worlds

Whether you enjoy the never resting atmosphere of the city or enjoy the quiet, scentic surroundings of the suberbs the local atmosphre of Saint Joseph's University caters to both. The campus is located between the "City of Brotherly Love" and the "Main Line." City Line Ave.provides great outlets for college students: good shopping( Target, Acme) and good eats( Pot Belly's, Qudoba, Chili's, California Pizza Kitchen and more!) There is so much to do in the city of Philadelphia including; trips to the Zoo, museums, downtown earteries, and great exercise/recreation areas. The best part is that no car is needed all of these places are public transportation accesible and make it easy for anyone to enjoy the day or night life of the city!

A Lot to Do, Very Close

The school offers a very safe and picturesque atmosphere while also being in a major city, yet close enough to the mainline and valley forge park to escape from the day to day. Being located at the overbrook stop on the R5 makes it easy to go into the city in about 5 minutes and down the mainline to many shopping locations and dining options. The school offers a lot of extras like buses into the city for restaurant week or to the King of Prussia mall for world class shopping. Nightlife directly surrounding campus isn't stellar, but Manayunk (where most upperclassman live) is extremely fun and offers a lot of shops, bars, cafes and art galleries. Overall a lot to offer.

Did You Know?

Five Fun Facts about Philadelphia:

• The legendary crack in the Liberty Bell was not an imperfection and occurs in all the bells by its maker. Also, every 4th of July the bell is actually tapped, not rung.
• Philadelphia suburb Conshohocken (five minutes from St. Joe’s) is home to the biggest printing press in North America. The plant prints the Philadelphia Inquirer, Philadelphia Daily News, and the East Coast version of the Los Angeles Times, among other newspapers.
• Philadelphia recently received two new sports stadiums. The Eagles play at Lincoln Financial Field, known around town as “The Linc,” and the Phillies play at Citizens Bank Stadium.
• The old Veterans Stadium actually housed a courtroom and jail under the stadium for fans who got a little too rowdy. After the new stadiums were built, the holding rooms and court were moved into downtown South Philly near famous Pat’s King of Steaks.
• At one point in its history, Philadelphia was only made up of what is now Center City. But through consolidation, the residents in surrounding areas such as Port Richmond and Fishtown now get a vote in the mayor’s race and call themselves “Philadelphians.”
