Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The best advice is that the parties and bars get better as you get older. Students learn to throw better parties and where to go out at night. Philly’s public transportation system is really good; the toughest part is figuring out which buses, trains, and trolleys go where. There is a subway, but it mostly runs toward South Philly, which is nowhere near St. Joe’s. Students who make the best use of public transportation generally are the best partiers because there’s a lot of very fun bars to discover that aren’t proximal to St. Joe’s.

There really isn’t a lot to do for kids younger than 21 outside of house parties. Clubs such as Shampoo offer alternatives during the week, but most clubs and bars become extra tight on the weekends. There are a couple of good places in the city to catch concerts, shows, or festivals, such as The Rotunda or the First Unitarian Church, but by the time most St. Joe’s kids find out about these venues, they’re not younger than 21 anymore. Drexel Arms Apartments is mostly dominated by frats and sororities, but it’s not your typical frat scene, and most people won’t be turned off by it. The only real significance is that those in the Greek organization having the party won’t have to pay to get in while others will.

Need an ID to Have Fun

At first I didn't believe that you actually needed a fake id or be 21 to have fun, but I was dead wrong. There are limited parties near campus that often get shut down quickly by Public safety since its in the middle of a family neighborhood. The only real fun is in manayunk which is like a college town for all the city schools, people often spend thursday-sunday there and hear the bars are awesome. However, would much rather have more house parties since have the rest of your life to go to the bars

Nightlife at SJU

There are not a lot of party places near SJU, which means that you would have to take the train to downtown Philadelphia. Unfortunately, the last train to take you back to SJU picks up at 1:00 am and if you miss that train you must pay for a cab (~$50) or walk home.

Parties

Finding a party on campus as a freshman is not easy. Many people generally go to parties at nearby schools like Drexel or Penn. SJU is right near Overbrook train station which makes it easy to get in and out of the city. Otherwise students split cabs.

What’s the best way to get to the popular nightlife spots?

Facts

Club Crawler

The nightclubs in Philadelphia are decent, but most are trying too hard to be Manhattan or LA, and they mostly close at 2 a.m. The following are the best nightclubs in the city and are usually filled with college students and locals.

Bar Prowler

While some students prefer the club scene, the pub and bar scene tend to be a little bigger at St. Joe’s. But the one thing that’s a must for students interested in drinking is specials.

Organization Parties

Every once in a while, groups such as the Red Shirt Orientation leaders will have parties, but you generally need to be a part of the group or really good friends/roommates with someone that’s in it. They also claim to be pretty strict on carding so that the school doesn’t give them a hard time.

Lucy’s Hat Shop Restaurant & Lounge

Lucy’s Hat Shop is the perfect place for hanging out, happy hour, or dancing all night. It offers inexpensive, tasty bistro food in a relaxed atmosphere. There are two rooms, two separate styles of DJs, two dance floors, and two bars. Rotating DJs spin rock ‘n’ roll and hip-hop weekly. There are pool tables and video games, an all-you-can-eat brunch buffet, and 15-foot high-definition TV screens.

Noche

Noche, one of Rittenhouse Square’s premiere happy hour bars, offers the comforts of a neighborhood bar, accented with sleek city style. A spacious room boasts 12-foot-high ceilings and a panoramic view of the city. An Argentinean-inspired menu and wine list complement the atmosphere. Other notable accessories include a pool table, jukebox, and imported cowhide-covered booths to cozy up in. Want to throw a party? Noche does it right! Hours of operation are Monday–Saturday 5 p.m.–2 a.m.; Friday 4:30 p.m.–2 .a.m.

Grape Street

Grape Street moved from its old home on—you guessed it—Grape Street, to the bottom of Main Street. It’s open seven nights a week and features a DJ lounge, a performance area where bands play, and a main bar room.

Emerald City

Emerald City is one of the few exceptions to the rule in the city, serving until 3 a.m. and open until 3:30 a.m., which is just part of its appeal. It’s widely known to be a frequent stop for visiting sports teams in town. But be ready to drop some serious cash; rubbing elbows with the stars is going to cost you. There’s a $5 cover Monday–Thursday, but there is a half-price cover and half-price drinks 10 p.m.–12 a.m.

Glam Restaurant and Lounge

“Old City’s newest lounge that dares you to think pink”— whatever that means. This lounge is located by Penn’s Landing in Old City, in the middle of all the action. Like most places in Old City, be prepared to drop some cash.

Maggie O’Neill’s Irish Pub & Restaurant

Maggie’s has been around for a while and is a favorite, especially to local kids who knew about it before coming to St. Joe’s. The atmosphere is pretty much what you would expect out of a local Irish pub with the crowd ranging from locals to college kids to older people. Check out Sunday night karaoke for Maggie’s most fun and interesting night.

Manayunk Brewery and Restaurant

Known affectionately to students as the “Brew Pub,” Manayunk Brewery serves its own brews with just a few exceptions. Early fall and spring are the best times to make use of the outdoor deck and bar that overlook the Schuylkill River. On Sundays, the Brew Pub’s brunch is an amazing way to recuperate from the damage you did to yourself the night before. Outside is the place to be, so during the winter months, it tends to get a little crowded inside.

McShea’s Restaurant & Bar

Check out McShea’s on Monday nights for pitcher specials and beer pong 10 p.m.–2 a.m. On Wednesdays, you’ll enjoy live acoustic performances as part of the Original Singer/ Songwriter Series. A $10 cover includes admission and a complimentary beverage. Thursdays bring $1 off Guinness drafts and open-mic night.

Brownies 23 East

Specials include Wednesday night Sink ‘r Swim specials, which include a $5 cover with 50 cent draft beers, 75 cent mixed drinks, $2 vodka/Red Bulls, and all-you-can-eat wings and pizza. It’s pretty much heaven on Earth for most college students, and you’d better have a designated driver or take the conveniently located train because happy hour here usually leads to a night of debauchery.

Fergie’s Pub

Fergie’s is a real-deal Irish pub. With the long, curly-haired namesake and owner patrolling the grounds with his Irish brogue, you may be surprised when you step out onto Philly’s Sansom Street instead of somewhere in downtown Dublin. This is the spot for lunch during the week, an after-work office get together, or for a pint and a night of high spirits! The most authentic part: no TV sets anywhere.

Kildare’s

It’s not only one of the most fun and authentic Irish pubs you’ll find around Philly, but it’s also one of the most innovative. Aesthetically, the bar is amazing, but the coolest part about Kildare’s is all the different food and drink specials. There is the“15-minute lunch” for those on the go, or the Monday night $10 complete Irish dinner experience. As for the beer, it’s one of the few places where, if you’re drinking that night’s special, you can get premium beers at low costs. Kildare’s most well-known special is the “St. Practice Day” that occurs on the 17th of every month when the advice “Don’t be an amateur on St. Patrick’s day” is given.
