Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

On-campus dining can get old pretty fast at St. Joe’s, so students usually quickly begin to explore the surrounding community. The best thing to do is work your way slowly outward from campus. Once you have sampled foods from the surrounding neighborhoods, you’ll probably have found at least one favorite. Larry’s, ironically located across from the main gym, usually becomes one of a freshman’s favorite late-night stops when returning from parties or looking for some late-night eats. There are also quite a few delis and take-out counters around, which often offer high-quality food for half the price of sit-down restaurants.

Once students have explored the immediate area around campus and Manayunk, they tend to move on to the city. Philly boasts all kinds of small, exotic restaurants as well as large, upscale digs. Check out www.citysearch.com for multiple reviews of a particular spot. Being in Philly, you have to have a cheesesteak. One of the largest-portioned steaks around can be found near St. Joe’s at Mama’s Pizzeria on Belmont Avenue. Numerous St. Joe’s students report taking on the ultimate in the cheesesteak experiences, the South Street challenge, where one attempts to eat an entire Jim’s steak wrapped in a slice of pizza from neighboring Lorenzo’s.

College Munchies (Don't Talk With Your Mouth Full)

Upon arrival to Saint Joe's the folklore of the freshmen 15 was something I laughed at for months, until I actually got here and saw that this was no folklore at all, this was the real thing! Driving past the countless restaurants , taking in all the smells I could, salivating at the prices, it was like I was in fat kids heaven. Being a broke college kid and a pretty athletic guy, at 6'0'' 185 lbs, I'm always hungry and never have a lot to spend. The restaurants surrounding the campus help a lot with that because of their low prices and great variety. The only reason I didn't give off campus dining an A or an A+ is because of some of the more healthier choices aren't as close to the campus as the others. Wendy's is right across the street, McDonalds is about a block away and there are steaks and burger places in great proximity but Chipotle and stores like Subway are about 3 to 5 blocks away.

OK Food/Long Lines

THe food at SJU is OK, but to get the best food, there are long, long lines and it takes time. Therefore, you often opt for quick fast food that is not as good. Overall, a lot of students opt to eventually take the money they would pay SJU and just use it "on their own" for food. There is good local food.
