Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Some juniors are staying on campus thanks to the new buildings and townhouses, which free up a lot more off-campus apartment. Living in an off-campus house can be tough because so many in the area are large and require many roommates, which brings the added stress of sharing a kitchen and one or two bathrooms with multiple people. Students need to make the decision whether the added space, freedom, and potential fun of an off-campus house is worth it. On the other hand, apartment life is generally cheaper and you usually have to pay fewer utilities.

St. Joe’s is helpful in its own way by holding housing fairs and posting a bulletin board of available places, people looking for roommates, and other assorted announcements. In the housing office, there is a color-coded map that shows areas around St. Joe’s that the University has deemed safe and unsafe for students to live. The Housing Office has the students’ best interests in mind, but recently the office has done a lot more policing of students than assisting them with finding housing. It’s becoming increasingly difficult to live off campus, yet close to campus. The key to finding a good place is to check out the neighborhood and the landlord’s background. Also, talk to people who lived in the complex or area. Students are always the best and most honest judges.

Saint Joes's Good Not Great (But Getting There)

Searching for off campus housing close to Saint Joe's is like searching for diamonds in the rough. There are many expensive diamonds if you have that type of money but there are also a lot rough apartments that you have to sift through until you find what you want at cheaper prices. About 5 years ago they built 2 really nice 5 storey off-campus apartments and they're in the process of building 2 more about a block away with great parking and with around the clock security officers. Off campus housing isn't that great but Saint Joe's is steadily improving.

Very Convenient

Off-Campus Housing is easy to find but I would avoid Manayunk if you can. The drive is terrible down City Ave every day and a couple of my friends had to drop out because they could not handle the combination of immediate accessibility to bars with having to get up an hour and half just to get to class on time. The rows of houses one to five blocks from campus are great if you can find 5-7 people to live with you.

So I Have Heard

I haven't had the chance to live off campus because I am required to be on campus since I am a freshman. But I have heard only positive things about off campus living.
