Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

St. Joe’s is in a good location for using public transportation. Check out www.septa.com and learn what trains and buses go where. Most people in Philadelphia commute to work on public transportation, so it is a fairly complex system that can be utilized very effectively if understood. Overbrook train station is right down the road, and Amtrak’s 30th Street station is just one stop away. Also, you can catch a bus to almost anywhere around City Line Avenue with all the different routes that routinely fly up and down the road. The bus is relatively inexpensive, and the City Avenue-oriented Cart is free with student ID.

Many St. Joe’s students complain that the trains stop running around midnight, which makes getting home late slightly challenging. Driving into the city is very easy; however, finding street parking can be tough, and garage parking can get pricey. A lot of students take a train in and then call a cab at the end of the night. Many students become familiar with the trains and subways by the end of their four years in Philly, but a majority of students never bother to figure out the buses unless they have to out of sheer necessity. While the public transportation system isn’t the best, it is good and very accessible to St. Joe’s students. Definitely invest some time and effort into figuring it out.

The Shuttles at SJU

The shuttles can take you either back and forth from campus to the east side of city avenue where shops and restaurants are or from campus to the west side of city avenue where all of the off campus university housing is. You have to base your events on their time schedule which is every 15 minutes during the school day but every half hour after 5 or on the weekends. If it is past 5, the shuttles usually run around 20 minutes late. Public Safety vans can also take you to different places around campus.

Public Saftey and the Shuttle

The main two forms of campus transportation are Public Safety and the shuttle. Public Safety will pick you up if you call and need a ride across campus or are nervous being alone. They tend to respond promptly. They will also stop if they see you walking at night to make sure you feel safe. The shuttle takes you to the upperclassman housing as well as neighboring stores/restaurants. They pick you up at various locations at campus and drop you off right where you need to go. The only issue with them is that they can take forever, you might find yourself waiting outside Target for an hour.

City Transportation= Great , School Transportation = Iffy

Public Transportation for getting around the city is so close and convenient. The train station is a block away and on several occasions I've gotten free rides. There are a lot of different buses that run all the time and stop right on campus. I'm not crazy about the school's shuttle and escort system though. Shuttles are somewhat unreliable. It's better to call ahead of time to make sure they're actually stopping where you are. Escorts are hard to get.
