Comparable Schools' Diversity Grades:
College Prowler Take
Diversity at San Diego State can be a tricky thing. When you’re walking around campus on the weekends, it often feels like everyone is an affluent white person. Greek life is dominated by these types of people, and it seems as if their presence is dominating in numerous aspects of campus life. However, if you truly open your eyes to all the areas of campus, you will find that diversity is actually quite high. Walking around campus on a weekday, you will see a variety of races and people of different cultures. It’s all a matter of how aware you are. If you look at only one scene, you will only see one particular perspective. If you look everywhere, you will see that there is plenty of diversity on the San Diego State campus. Statistical figures for San Diego State confirm the presence of diversity on campus. There is a large representation of Hispanics and Asians. San Diego State, statistically, is actually considered highly diverse. The classrooms are a perfect example to show off the campus’ diversity. Many ethnic backgrounds and races are represented. I think we have a good Hispanic representation, but I don’t think there is a representative African American population or any other minority. There are lots of women here. This campus is not overwhelmingly open to embracing homosexuals, but they aren’t shunned either. |

With the strong Greek life here at San Diego State, falling within the crowd is definitely encouraged. If you wear a shirt that is a little too bright or comb your hair in a certain way, you might be ostracized. This is not to say that San Diego State is intolerant; tolerance is here, it is just not readily visible.
Minority Clubs
Afrikan Student Union, Arab Student Union, Asian Pacific Student Alliance, Black Social Work Student Caucus, Ethiopian Student Association, Japanese Student Society, Muslim Cultural Club, Raices Unidas, Russian Club, Vietnamese Student Association
Most Common Religions
For better or for worse, religion does not play a big role here at San Diego State. People are far more concerned with what fraternity or sorority you’re aligned with rather than who you pray to. The largest presence felt on campus would be that of the Jewish community simply because they have their own fraternity.
Political Activity
Like the rest of California, politics here at San Diego State tend to fall on the liberal side. While walking through Aztec Center, you will hear protestors preaching about the environment, equal rights, and other issues that they will try to get you to support by signing their petitions. Most of the professors on campus are liberal, though there are a few that fall on the conservative side.
