Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Greek presence is enormous here, and you will see signs of it everywhere you go. Walking through campus you will see Greek letters embroidered on everything from T-shirts to hot pants. Sororities walk in unison down the streets, fraternities roam the campus dressed in monkey suits, and the call of the Greek kegger ripples its way through the whispering voices of young freshmen. With the overwhelming presence of the Greeks and their parties, it often seems like they hold a monopoly on the social life and nightlife of the school, but this is not the case. Whether or not you join a fraternity or sorority, there are plenty of social activities that you can participate in, and there will be plenty of partying for you to indulge in.

Fraternities and sororities are very tight social organizations that have a huge presence here on campus, especially during rush week and other such times. You will constantly hear Greek speak whether you like it or not. If you can’t stand Greeks, chances are that you’ve already stopped reading this section or thrown this book into a bonfire, because Greek presence IS that strong. Even with the strength of the Greeks, there is plenty of social life left for those outside of the system. You do not have to join them in order to have a good time on the weekends. For those interested in becoming fraternity or sorority members, San Diego State offers a plethora of options for you, and a social presence of the Greeks that you are sure to appreciate.

Rush Rush Rush

Greek Life is always trying to get new recruits it can get annoying after a while but eventually they go away. If you want to join Greek life SDSU has many unique sororities and fraternities but if not it's not that big of a deal and you can still participate in many of their activities.

Going Greek

Greek life is pretty big on campus. Throughout the day you're bound to see someone with something greek related but it definitely doesn't dominate all of its social aspects. There is some drama between sororities but otherwise it's a good way to meet people.

Rush is stressful but so worth it!

It's not easy for girls to Rush because there's a lot of competition. This year 750 girls signed up to Rush 8 sororities and each sorority gave bids out to about 70 girls each. There's more girls who want to join a sorority then there is an open spot so it was hard to see lots of tears when girls weren't chosen. I got my top choice in sorority but it wasn't easy. My advice is to be yourself and show your personality. Get a lot of sleep because it's draining to meet so many new people all at once and keep smiling. You're interviewing them to so use the time wisely when visiting each sorority house. Try and find girls you have common interests with and then you naturally end up in the right sorority.
