Dorms at San Diego State

there are some dorms that are big and spacious but others that are extremely small. There is an option for upperclassmen that are really nice. It is also very expensive to live in the dorms and almost not worth all the money.

You're on Your Own

SDSU is kind of a commuter school, so on-campus transportation i s close to none. The Red&Black Shuttle does make rounds on weekdays, but I have never taken it nor do I know anyone else who has. However, many off-campus apartments provide shuttle services to school, and if you're trying to get OFF campus, we have our own city transit station that can take you all over San Diego, even to Tijuana if you're feeling a fiesta.

Tons of Choices

there are tons of apartments walking distance to sdsu and a short drive. the prices vary for the apartments from around $550-$1000 per month. its very easy to find an apartment whether you want your own room or sharing, furnished or non furnished, walk or drive. there are also a lot of houses very close by to the school and the prices are relatively good

Computers

The computer labs are generally well-kept. There's an entire section that recently upgraded their monitors, which is of huge benefit. The computer lab in The Dome generally runs pretty slow, which could be improved. Overall the computer labs are pretty well-stocked, and you can even make a reservation for a computer ahead of time.

Only One Year!

The dorms were bittersweet. I loved it on one hand because of all the people I met and how much fun we had with each other, but I hated it because of some extra strict Resident Advisors. The furniture is average, its right on campus and it is in a safe area. Fun for the first year but I wanted to move on.

Strict Policies

There's not much drug use here, though marijuana is relatively common. Drinking is much more popular. The party school rep is true, but it's gotten a lot better in the past couple years. The policies against illegal drug usage are really strict.

Football and Basketball Are the Biggest Draws

The basketball team has played well for several years, but the football team this year is a huge surprise! They're bowl eligible this year, and student attendance to the games is increasing. School spirit is increasing with the addition of "The Jungle"-- the new student section at the games.

Guys and Girls

I don't have very many friends at school but the ones I have made are all very different and nice. There are too many fraternities and sororities that fill the school with tools and skanky girls. Crime and accident rates would be a lot lower if it weren't for Greek based parties. But there are people there who actually care about their education. I like these people, the geeks. Too bad you can't find any good looking ones.

New Off-Campus Meal Plan

As a student living in Aztec Corner Apts during the summer who hates to cook and with campus being closed I constantly visited the McDonalds around the corner, 4.0 or the local taco shops. That got old real fast. My mom, the saint that she is, just signed me for a meal card she read about online that became my new savior. Its called San Diego Student Dollars and its a meal card that works at all the restaurants around Montezuma and College. I can also pick up real cheap sandwiches at Windmill Farms Grocery, which if you haven't been there I suggest checking out. My only issue so far is there are a few places that don't accept the card yet like State Street and the terriyaki spot but overall they have enough variety for me to eat without spending my own cash. If you're like me and hate to cook and are sick of the dining hall I suggest telling your parents about this off campus meal card. It'll save your stomach and your cash

Modern With a Touch of Old Mission-Style Design...

Our gym, the Aztec Recreation Center, is the largest and nicest gym I have ever seen. The equipment is exchanged for the newest and best ever few years. Membership is free to students living on-campus, and only $18/month for students living off-campus. Membership also includes access to the AMAZING Aquaplex (pool area), bowling center, and group classes (like dance, yoga, kick boxing, etc.)

Our football team plays at the Qualcomm Stadium, which we share with the professional team, the San Diego Chargers.

The campus overall is gorgeous and offers everything a student needs. It is like a city all in itself. There are over 20 restaurants, including my personal favorites: a frozen-yogurt store called Just Chill, a really good build-your-own salad place called Salad Sensations, and 3 Starbucks locations, all of which are included in the meal plans.

The Dorms Are a Good Start

The dorms are cool mainly because they help you meet new people. I seen students who commute as freshmen and they look like they have less social interaction with other students, probably because they dont get a chance to meet others.

Party Hard, but Study Harder!

I love SDSU, the people are great, the college life is amazing and the weather is the best! I would do it all over again if I could. However, I regret not signing up for a traditional dorm room. I signed up for University Towers, which has its own bathroom for convenience. However, you meet less people this way. Traditional dorms may be hectic and loud, but that is the BEST way to meet people and make new friends which is especially important as a freshman.

Drinking Is More Popular

There isn't too much hardcore drug use. People may smoke weed, but other than that not much else is common. There is however a lot of drinking and partying. Alcohol is very visible, you can walk by apartments on your way home on a Friday night and see solo cups and people clearly out drinking or stumbling back home.

Food!

I remember the first week or so of each semester, people would walk around and hand out coupon books to students. There are A LOT of places to eat in and around campus, and many of them give student discounts. Some require the coupons, and some just need student ID's. There's such a variety of places to eat off-campus, that you just need to go check everything out for yourself.

The Area

San Diego State is centrally located so that you have plenty of attractions and activities to do. If ever you want to get out and go around town, the places you can go to is virtually unlimited. Shopping malls are just 10 miles one way, you have plenty of dining everywhere, if you want to go to a casino, that's a few miles the other way, and downtown is very close as well. My point is, you can never run out of things to do here.

I Live With My Parents.

I live with my parents, and it makes it really easy to get things that I need, and I spend less money that way. I save money by carpooling with friends and taking classes every other day. If you're looking for your own apartment to live in, its kind of difficult to find one near campus. If you want to move around the school, the best bet would be just to dorm. But if you absolutely have no choice but to find an apartment outside of the local area, I don't think transportation will be a problem; we have our own bus system and our own trolley station. Also, look on bulletin boards around campus; people frequently put up offers about having rooms for rent.

Serious Academics, No Boundaries With Social Life

San Diego State University has a reputation for being a party school and it does live up to its name. There are great places to party and be social, but that depends on who you're with and where you hang out. Academically, there are amazingly intelligent students that attend this university. There are many that take education seriously, but are not afraid to have fun.

Since SDSU is a big campus with a lot of students, it is hard to find an open computer. We do have a couple computer labs where students can use computers. I do think if a laptop is accessible, students should bring one.

The facilities at SDSU are good. We have a gym on campus, the ARC, that I have heard is very nice to work out at. We also have the Aquaplex, where people can go to swim. Our library is also nice. It is pretty big, and there are a lot of computers where people can do research and print out classwork. There are plenty of food places and two Starbucks on campus, which I like!
