College Prowler Take
Safety and security at San Diego State is strong. You will notice this by walking around campus and seeing the safety patrol vehicles driving through at all hours of the day. Safety at San Diego State is a non-issue for most people. With abundant blue-light emergency stations located throughout campus and a 24-hour escort service, students feel they are being adequately protected by campus security. Every once in a while, you will hear about an incident that occurred in one of the parking structures late at night, but these happenings are infrequent, and almost always end with the victim getting away safely. Most people go throughout their entire career at San Diego State without ever experiencing an incident that would have them questioning their safety. The school goes to great lengths to ensure that students are being watched out for, and every year security is getting stronger, and students are being more closely looked out for. Overall, security on campus is great, and almost all students feel safe around San Diego State. Most incidents tend to take place in fraternity houses and house parties, where there is little security and regulation. If the school were to hire more security guards to watch over the parking structures 24 hours a day, seven days a week, the parking structures would be solid, and these incidents that are sometimes written about in the Daily Aztec would never occur. Besides these issues, students should feel undoubtedly safe when walking around campus. Safety and Security is definitely strong, but it could be even stronger if some minor alterations were made to security procedures.

I feel pretty safe on campus. We can call campus police if we have problems or want to be escorted back to our cars or around campus. Although it is an open campus, I don't feel scared walking on campus.

You don't hear about crime too...
You don't hear about crime too often on campus, so I suppose security is doing a good job. I never really see them except for the night time when they prowl for drunk drivers, which is a good thing but definitely overdone. They are mostly trying to get their ticket quota up. Not too much crime that I know of happens very often, although there are a few serious things every once in a great while., like busting hard drugs and rapes. The school has emergency beacons placed around the campus and lots of lights that are always on, which is a good thing of course.

I don't live on campus, so I'm not...
I don't live on campus, so I'm not really sure about housing security. When I was a freshman, a guy I was dating lived in campus housing, and he and his roommates never locked their doors and never had any problems. I still would though, definitely. There are always shady people around. As a girl, I always keep a little thing of mace with me in case I ever get stuck around campus at night by myself or with a few of my friends. And obviously, always lock your car. I feel like I hear about a lot of people getting their things stolen.

It sometimes seems like they crack down on skateboarding, checking IDs in the library, and parking violations too often, while letting more serious offenses such as rapes and attacks get by because they are too busy. |

Security is pretty good as far as I’ve heard. There are little phone booths located all over campus and in the parking structures that you can use to dial campus security if you need an escort somewhere, or if you’re in trouble. The blue emergency stations seem to do a good job preventing incidents. |
