Comparable Schools' Computers Grades:
College Prowler Take
The computer network on campus is sufficient for all student needs. If you have your own computer, there are direct Ethernet connections in all the dorm rooms, and wireless networks in several buildings. Connections are fast, and the University e-mail service is reliable. Various departments also have lots of online resources. Students can use the SCU Web site to send and receive e-mail, enroll or drop classes, apply for jobs, access classroom materials, and more. The computer labs in the library and Kenna Hall generally run pretty smoothly. They do get a bit crowded at the end of the quarter when final papers and projects are due, but even then it’s rare that an open computer cannot be found in one or the other. Some students have voiced annoyance that the computers in the labs do not have disk drives, but for the most part, they seem to adapt to the new technologies quickly.

Most of the buildings now have wireless Internet, so having a laptop with wireless capabilities is ideal. You can always use the computer labs if you need to. |

File-sharing has died down a bit since people started getting prosecuted, but students can still trade programs, songs, movies, and stuff. If both people are on the campus network, it goes really, really fast. |

You should definitely bring your own computer. I found it a good way to keep touch with some friends back home, although it’s sometimes hard to get any productive work done in my room. Laptops are too fragile, but they are nice to have, because there is wireless Internet access in a lot of the buildings here. |

I brought my own computer, which I use mostly for eBay purchases. If I’m going to do work, I’ll go to the computer lab, which is uncrowded unless it’s the last week of the quarter. |
