College Prowler Take

This seems like a good place to address SCU’s religious status. There are many Jesuits on the faculty, including the president of the University, and there is a large Catholic community. If you are Catholic, that’s great. But if you aren’t, or come from a Catholic school background but are not religious (like me), the school’s religious affiliation may make you more reluctant to enroll. Don’t worry about it. You won’t be forced to go to mass or do something Christian around holidays. Among the several Jesuit professors I’ve had here, none have started preaching in class or been forceful about their beliefs. So if you were hesitating because of that, don’t sweat it.

That being said, Santa Clara is not the most diverse school out there. Whites and Roman Catholics make up the bulk of the student body. This is not to say that there is no diversity, but certain demographics are largely unrepresented. For example, there are sizable numbers of Hispanic and Asian American students, but very few African Americans; many non-Catholic students, but few practicing non-Christians. However, the area where SC is most homogenous is not race or religion, but economic background. Sure, there are some students on full scholarship who do not have a lot of money, but for the most part, the student body ranges from slightly rich to Uncle-Scrooge-from-Duck-Tales rich.

Diversity? Yeah right, diversity at Santa Clara ranges from white to albino. Except the engineering school, where they have some Asians, too.

I think right around half the student body is some kind of minority. A lot of those are Asian, though, and 60 percent white isn’t that diverse anyway. It’s not really a big issue, though. I guess it’s moderately diverse, but very tolerant.

There are a ton of whites, a lot of Asians and Hispanics, quite a few Arabs, and almost no blacks. That’s not terribly diverse, I guess, but it’s not like School Ties or anything. Most people come from such similar backgrounds that race is not such a big deal.

I hear the Multicultural Center is really cool, but since I’m white, I feel like I wouldn’t be very welcome. So I’ve never actually been inside it.

Racially, it’s pretty diverse. Culturally, not so much.

Facts

Economic Status

While by no means made up entirely of “rich kids,” much of the student body seems to come from fairly wealthy backgrounds.

Gay Pride

The gay community at Santa Clara is relatively small and accepted by almost all. Any hostility one might fear because of the school’s religious affiliation is either unfounded or outweighed by the fact that the school is in the Bay Area, one of the most liberal areas of the country, and was founded by Jesuits, who are among the most liberal Catholics.

Minority Clubs

Arab Cultural Society, Asian-Pacific Islander Student Union, Black Student Union, Chinese Student Union, Filipino Student Union, Hawaiian Student Union, Intandesh (South Asian), Latino Student Union, Vietnamese Student Union

Most Common Religions

A majority of the student body is Christian, with Roman Catholic being the most common denomination. Almost 25 percent of the student body defines itself as “unaffiliated” religiously.

Political Activity

Most students are politically and socially liberal, but not uniformly so. The religious history of the school and its location in the Bay Area contribute to a fairly diverse political climate. Rallies and protests on or near campus are infrequent. Many politically-active students are members of the Santa Clara Community Action Program (SCCAP).
