Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The drug scene at Santa Clara is pretty tame, centering mostly around alcohol and marijuana. While both are commonly used among students, alcohol tends to be most students' drug of choice. While many students drink, not all do, and campus organizations are pretty good about offering alternative activities for those who don't. Students who choose not to drink usually aren't pressured to do so, but some may feel left out at big off-campus parties where almost everyone else is engaged in some drinking-related activity.

Campus Safety strictly enforces campus alcohol and drug policies. Depending on the violation, students caught drinking underage or using drugs can get stuck with a fine between $50 and $100, community service, and a letter sent home. But students usually only get caught if they're visibly intoxicated or making a lot of noise in their rooms, so avoiding trouble just requires using common sense.

Medical Amnesty and Good Samaritan Policies

Let's be honest - it's college: most people drink and party while they're here. However, there are those that don't drink as well. But if you do, be careful not to hold a cup on the street, or the cops will cite you. But when they go to break up parties, they're just going to come in and shut it down, not usually write anyone up unless they're openly holding alcohol and they ask to see an ID.

If you happen to get too intoxicated and one of your friends call the EMS because they're worried about you, whether or not their intoxicated as well, there will be a reduction of penalties because SCU tries to promote looking out for everyone. These policies are called Medical Amnesty and Good Samaritan. Look them up online for more info.

They're really strict on the policies if you continually break them, but otherwise, first offenses are really chill. You just have to talk to the Resident Director of your dorm, complete more alcohol-awareness training online, and do a certain number of hours for community service.

Drug Safety

SCU is great at having a mandatory meeting at the beginning of the year where they discuss these issues and talk about real stories that have happened. They discuss how to be safe and the spots where one can ask for help. They give tips and offer a place where one can go talk to someone about these types of issues. They say it is a choice you will have to decide. Students will drink or smoke(outside of campus), but they know the consquences. (drinking is more popular) There are rules where one cannot drink in the dorms because they will have consequences.
