College Prowler Take
Many students are disappointed with the nightlife at Santa Clara. There are only a few bars within walking distance of campus, and no clubs. So few that if someone tells you they are “going to the bar,” you can be 90 percent sure that they are referring to the Hut. Dance clubs are not popular among the students, at least partly because they are not convenient. To do any real clubbing you’ll have to head into San Jose, which probably means springing for a taxi. The lack of bars and clubs near campus means that house parties dominate the social scene. The good news is that they are numerous and cheaper than going to a bar. For the most part, they are also receptive to almost everyone and safe. The SCPD breaks them up frequently, but usually just gives warnings to the owners of the house. Partygoers themselves are hardly ever ticketed. The bad news is that they are house parties. That means lots of people in small spaces, long waits to get a foamy cup of Natural Light, and even longer ones to use the bathroom. If that kind of party is not your cup of tea (or Natty, as it were), you will need to find some like-minded people to go out with, and one of you better have a car.

The parties can be fun if they don’t get broken up early. Some houses have more problems with the cops, probably due to location. Your average keg party will usually get warned by the cops at about 11 p.m. and die down for 45 minutes or an hour, and then everyone will get drunk and loud again, and it will get busted for real at 1 or 2 in the morning. |

The Santa Clara police have too...
The Santa Clara police have too much money and officers for the amount of actual crime that goes on. It’s not unusual to see three brand-new cop cars, one of them an SUV, show up to break up a party and write a forty-eight. It sucks when they break up all the big parties early in the night. |

Legal drinkers tend to pack into one campus-affiliated bar, The Hut. When it’s busy, the outside section is the place to be, but ordering and paying can be frustrating. The bar lacks sufficient entertainment, other than a pool table that is too crowded to play on. For live music and other sorts of entertainment, the Bronco is far more promising and open. |

Parties get old quickly and are quite repetitive. They are usually broken up before things have time to really get going, leaving clumps of students wandering the streets drunk and aimless. That’s when it’s nice to have a house of your own, so you and your friends have somewhere to fall back on. |

The Hut is the main student bar....
The Hut is the main student bar. It isn’t bad, but it isn’t good—better than the other places around here. The owners are cool. There are usually three big parties a year, one thrown by each fraternity. I am in a fraternity, so I think those parties are the best, of course. Plus, we have mixers with sororities, and those are a blast—they're usually better than open parties. |
FactsClub Crawler
While clubbing is not very popular among SCU students, it is not due to a lack of places to go. The newly renovated Santana Row, about one mile from campus, has several nightclubs to choose from, but the hottest spots, like Toons and Zoe, are located in downtown San Jose.
Bar Prowler
The Hut, located directly across the street from campus, is the most popular bar in the area, frequently offering student specials (like Senior Night). Blinky’s Can’t Say Lounge offers a more low-key atmosphere. C&J’s has live entertainment semi-regularly, but is less popular because it is farther off campus and is a little more expensive.
