College Prowler Take

There is a variety of off-campus dining within walking distance from campus. Mexican, Chinese, Italian, BBQ, bakeries, fast food; you can find just about whatever you want. The one area lacking options is upscale, sit-down restaurants. You’ll have to head to San Jose or Los Gatos for that. But just because something is cheap doesn’t mean it’s not good. Fast Delivery Pizza, Mondo Burrito, and Mission City Bakery are all delicious and affordable.

The Flex Account is a good option for students who want to expand their dining options, or parents who may be a little worried about where the money they’re spending on food or books is actually ending up. Most places within a few blocks of campus accept it, and a few that are further off. The exceptions are fast food chains like McDonald’s, Jack in the Box, and Taco Bell, the absence of which may actually sweeten the deal for concerned parents.

My favorite places are Mondo—but I wouldn’t call that a restaurant—and Thai Pepper. Then there is Santana Row, which has a bunch of really nice places like Maggiano’s, a great Italian place.

Coming from out of state, everyone told me how great In-N-Out Burger was. I knew about it from The Big Lebowski, so I tried it out. It sucked. Do yourself a favor and don’t go there.

There are plenty of places to eat around here, but one glaring problem—no White Castles. I can’t believe they don’t have one within a block of every college in the country.
